Third-Party Software for SAS® 9.1.3 Foundation with Service Pack 2 and Service Pack 3

Java Runtime Environments

The following versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) are recommended for use with the SAS Foundation and SAS client applications. Application servers and servlet engines require a full Java Software Development Kit (JDK). See the next section for a list of Java Development Kits required by supported application servers. The Java Runtime Environments are provided on the Third Party Components - Volume 1 and 2 CDs. They can also be downloaded directly from the vendor as noted in the following tables.

After a JRE is installed from SAS media onto the Windows platform, as will show up in the Windows "Add or Remove Programs" dialog as:

SAS Private JRE (J2SE(tm)Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1)

These Java Runtime Environments are provided by Sun Microsystems, IBM, and HP. They are equivalent to the versions that can be downloaded from the vendor websites, but have been configured for exclusive use by SAS products installed on your system.

The JREs listed below require an update to support new Daylight Saving Time changes beginning March 11, 2007. Please see Effect of changes to Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the USA on Java (with SAS® 9.1.3) for complete details.

Java Software Development Kits

The JDKs listed below require an update to support new Daylight Saving Time changes beginning March 11, 2007. Please see Effect of changes to Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the USA on Java (with SAS® 9.1.3) for complete details.

The following table identifies Java Software Development Kit (JDK) requirments for supported application servers and z/OS. Application servers and servlet engines require the use of a full JDK. It is not necessary to download a JDK for the Websphere Application Server. The Websphere Application Server comes embedded with a specific version of the IBM JDK which is automatically installed and used by Websphere. For z/OS, there is no separate Java Runtime Environment, and therefore a JDK must be used with the SAS^® Foundation. For SAS^® Java clients and other platforms supported by the SAS Foundation, use the JRE recommendations listed above.

Note that WebSphere is packaged with it's own JDK and it can not be swapped out with another JDK. Currently SAS supports WebSphere Application Server 5.1 with the following service applied to bring it to the supported version of 5.1.1.2: WebSphere Application Server Version 5.1 Fix Pack 1 (Version 5.1.1)  WebSphere Application Server Version 5.1.1 Cumulative Fix 2  You must review and follow the instructions for obtaining these required items from IBM. Security Patches for WebLogic Server 8.1 SP3

The following security advisories were issued by BEA. Security Patches (identified by CR numbers) address the security vulnerabilities and can be applied to WebLogic Server 8.1 SP3. The links provide information on each security issue and should be used to evaluate if the patch is required in your environment. Upgrading to a later service pack, as suggested on some of the links below, is not supported by SAS.

You can verify patches already installed on the Admin or Managed server by opening the respective log and searching for the following text: "WebLogic Temporary Patch". As part of server startup, the server log lists patches installed. The following Managed server log excerpt shows that patches CR122962 and CR132541 are installed. It is recommended that the Admin and Managed servers be at the same patch level.

Additional security advisories may be published by BEA. For any advisory not listed above, installing the associated patch is supported but not required. Upgrading to a later service pack, however, is not supported. We recommend that you review the current list of advisories to determine whether any additional patches are appropriate for your environment. Registration is also available to receive e-mail notification of new security advisories from BEA as they are published.

WebSphere 5.1 Fixes

Currently SAS supports WebSphere Application Server 5.1 with

(1) WebSphere Application Server Version 5.1 Fix Pack 1

(2) WebSphere Application Server Version 5.1.1 Cumulative Fix 2

These are two separate fix packs that must be installed on WebSphere Application Server 5.1 to bring it to the supported 5.1.1.2 level.

First you apply WebSphere Application Server Version 5.1 Fix Pack 1 to bring the server from 5.1 to the 5.1.1 level. Please note that there are separate fix packs for the Base product and the ND product. If you have ND you will also need to install it's fix pack.

Then you apply the 5.1.1 Cumulative Fix 2 to bring the server from 5.1.1 to 5.1.1.2 level. You must obtain the 5.1.1.2 cumulative fixes directly from the IBM support FTP site. Read the Readme for Cumulative Fix 2 for WebSphere Application Server Version 5.1.1. It tells you what files to download and how to install the cumulative fix. To obtain the cumulative fix, you will go to the 5.1.1 Cumulative Fix 2 FTP site and download the applicable file for your particular platform. As with 5.1.1, there are separate cumulative fixes for the Base and the ND products, so if you have ND you will also need to install it's cumulative fix.

Please note that when you go to these URLs, you can just download the package for your particular platform. The UpdateInstaller is included in the package so there is no need to download the UpdateInstaller separately. Read the Readme files at the above URLs for fix pack installation instructions. Set your JAVA_HOME to your WAS_HOME/java directory before running the updateWizard program.

Web Browsers

The SAS® Business Intelligence Platform and any solutions built on that platform only support Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 and higher.

The SAS® 9.1 Foundation was tested using the Web browsers listed below. Higher versions may also be used, but there may be compatibility issues.

For the UNIX and VMS platforms, the SAS® 9.1 Foundation was developed to support a Mozilla-based browser for Help and Online Documentation display and the viewing of ODS HTML output. SAS recommends the use of the Netscape or Mozilla browser supplied by the operating system vendor.

For the Windows platforms, the SAS® 9.1 Foundation uses Microsoft Internet Explorer for wbrowse and can use either Microsoft Internet Explorer or an embedded browser to display ODS results.

Web (HTTP) Servers

Web (HTTP) servers are frequently configured for use as proxy servers that support load balancing and firewall configurations in front of the Web application servers that host the SAS Web applications. HTTP servers can also be used to serve static content that is associated with Java web applications. Refer to your selected Web application server vendor's configuration requirements for a list of HTTP servers that are supported for use in this manner.

SAS® Data Surveyor for Clickstream Data Mid-Tier requires the installation of Apache HTTP Server. Apache HTTP Server requirements for use with SAS Data Surveyor for Clickstream Data Mid-tier can be found in the install center.

WebDAV Servers

For specific information regarding SAS^®Products/Solutions and WebDAV support, please review the installation instructions for the SAS^®Product or Solution you are installing.

Xythos WFS Database Requirements

• DB2
  To use the WFS DB2 module, the DB2 database version needs to be 8.0 or higher. During install:
  • The database must be created with UTF8 for the National character set.
  • For the global schema database, administrators must create two tablespaces: one Regular tablespace with a pagesize of at least 32K for tables and indexes and one System Temporary tablespace with a pagesize of at least 32K for system space for joins.
  • For each document store, administrators must create three tablespaces: one Regular with a pagesize of at least 32K for tables and indexes, one System Temporary tablespace with a pagesize of at least 32K for system space for joins, and one User Temporary tablespace with a pagesize of at least 4K for declared global temporary tables.
  • The administrator should periodically manage data statistics using the statistics utility, RUNSTAT. Specifically, use the command reorgchk update statistics on table all from the command center to manage data statistics.
  • The DB2 tablespaces can be system-managed, but if you put the tables and indexes in separate tablespaces, you must define an additional tablespace for the indexes and make them user-managed because DB2 prohibits keeping indexes and tables in separate tablespaces.
• Microsoft SQL Server
  • To use the WFS Microsoft SQL Server module, MS SQL Server 2000 or higher is required. As with PostgreSQL, SQL Server uses multiple databases and thus, Xythos WFS requires one database for the Xythos Global Schema and a database for each Xythos Document Store. These databases are created through the SQL Server interface. During install, the database users created must be granted both "db_datareader" and "db_datawriter" rights on the respective database that each user will be accessing.
• Oracle
  • To use the WFS Oracle module, the Oracle database version needs to be 8i (8.1.7) or higher. During install:
  • The database must be created with UTF8 for the National character set. The Standard database character set can be any value and, in general, should not be UTF8 for maximum performance.
  • The database must be created with a block size of 8K or greater.
  • If installing Oracle 8, the database must be created with the 8.1.0, as opposed to 8.0.5, compatibility option.
  • The database must be created with its "open_cursors" startup parameter equal to the value of 150 or higher. Note that on NT/Windows 2000 installations, the default is 100.
  • Because Oracle typically uses only one database instance, Xythos WFS requires schemas, a.k.a. users, to be created. WFS uses one schema for the Xythos Global Schema and at least one other schema for a Xythos Document Store.
• PostgreSQL
  
  • To use the WFS PostgreSQL module, the PostgreSQL database version 7.2.1 or higher is required. Because PostgreSQL uses multiple databases, Xythos WFS requires one database for the Xythos Global Schema and a database for each Xythos Document Store.

Xythos WFS JDBC Driver Requirements

• DB2
  If using the DB2 database, WFS requires type 4 of the driver be used. This file should be obtained from IBM to ensure correctness. Visit the IBM Web site to obtain the proper file.
• Microsoft SQL
  If using an MS SQL Server database, there are several different JDBC drivers from which to choose. The Microsoft SQL Server JDBC Driver (SP2 and higher) can be used. The Xythos-SQL Server module has also been extensively tested using the Sprinta2000 driver.
• Oracle
  If using the Oracle database, Xythos recommends Oracle's thin JDBC driver be used for better performance. WFS requires version 9.2.0.1 of the driver be used regardless of the version of Oracle used. This file should be obtained from Oracle to ensure correctness. Visit the Oracle Web site to obtain the proper file.
• PostgreSQL
  If using the PostgreSQL database, WFS requires use of the PostgreSQL 7.4 JDBC driver. Obtain the PostgreSQL JDBC driver version 7.4 from the PostgreSQL web site. (This is true even if using PostgreSQL 8.0)
