SAS® 9.4 Support for Java
Java Runtime Environment
SAS Foundation, the SAS middle tier, and certain SAS client applications require the use of a Java Runtime Environment (JRE). SAS provides the SAS Private JRE as part of the standard deployment process. The SAS Private JRE, which is supported by SAS, is delivered for exclusive use with SAS products. Support for the SAS Private JRE follows the guidelines that are described on the SAS Technical Support Services and Policies page.
SAS provides regular security updates for the SAS Private JRE, as documented in SAS Note 56203. Security updates for the SAS Private JRE are typically released four times a year. When the updates are available, SAS performs internal tests and then posts the updated files that customers can retrieve. Customers can update the SAS Private JRE without changing other software on their system. Refer to SAS Note 56203 for additional information.
Beginning with the sixth maintenance release of SAS 9.4 (SAS 9.4M6), which was generally available in the fourth quarter of 2018, the SAS Private JRE is based on Java 8 technology. SAS 9.4 versions that precede M6 use a SAS Private JRE that is based on Java 7.
SAS ensures that customers continue to receive security updates for both versions of the SAS Private JRE. SAS works with technology providers to monitor potential security issues related to both Java 7 and Java 8 and to provide security fixes for both versions of the SAS Private JRE.
SAS 9.4 maintenance releases will contain the latest tested version of the SAS Private JRE, based on product build time. Customers who are applying a maintenance update for SAS software may also want to retrieve and apply a SAS Private JRE hot fix in order to obtain the most recent security fixes.
Java Development Kit (JDK)
If you are installing a JRE on a zOS system, review SAS Note 51195 for recommendations about the supported Java releases. You will need to retrieve the JRE for zOS systems directly from IBM.
