SAS® 9.4 Support for Java

Java Runtime Environment

SAS Foundation, the SAS middle tier, and certain SAS client applications require the use of a Java Runtime Environment (JRE).  SAS provides the SAS Private JRE as part of the standard deployment process.  The SAS Private JRE, which is supported by SAS, is delivered for exclusive use with SAS products.  Support for the SAS Private JRE follows the guidelines that are described on the SAS Technical Support Services and Policies page.

SAS provides regular security updates for the SAS Private JRE, as documented in SAS Note 56203.  Security updates for the SAS Private JRE are typically released four times a year.  When the updates are available, SAS performs internal tests and then posts the updated files that customers can retrieve.  Customers can update the SAS Private JRE without changing other software on their system.

Beginning with SAS 9.4M8, generally available in the first quarter of 2023, the SAS Private JRE is based on Java 11 technology for Windows, UNIX, and Linux systems, and on Java 8 for z/OS and z/64. In SAS 9.4M7 and SAS9.4M6, the SAS private JRE is based on Java 8.

SAS 9.4 versions that precede SAS9.4M6 use a SAS Private JRE that is based on Java 7, for which commercial support from the vendor ended in July 2022.

SAS 9.4 maintenance releases will contain the latest tested version of the SAS Private JRE, based on product build time. Customers who are applying a maintenance update for SAS software might also want to retrieve and apply a SAS Private JRE hot fix in order to obtain the most recent security fixes.

Java Development Kit (JDK)

If you are installing a JRE on a z/OS system, review SAS Note 51195 for recommendations about the supported Java releases.  You will need to retrieve the JRE for z/OS systems directly from IBM.
