Usage Note 56203: Downloading the SAS® Private Java Runtime Environment version 7, version 8, or version 11 update for SAS® 9.3 and SAS® 9.4

DetailsDownloadsAboutRate It

SAS delivers regular updates of the SAS Private JRE based on Java 11 for use with SAS® 9.4M8 (TS1M8) and Java 8 for use on z/OS and z64 on SAS 9.4M8, SAS® 9.4M7 (TS1M7), and SAS® 9.4M6 (TS1M6).

SAS has stopped delivering new Java 7 updates due to the decision by Azul, the SAS Java vendor, to end "Commercial Support" for Java 7. SAS will continue to provide the last Java 7 update, which was released by SAS in August 2022.

This SAS Note describes how to download the SAS Java Runtime Environment (JRE) updates for SAS® 9.4M3 (TS1M3) – SAS 9.4M8. For details about the requirements for using Java 7, Java 8, and Java 11, see the SAS Third-Party Software Requirements page, scroll to your version of SAS, and click the associated JRE link.

If you are using SAS® 9.3M2 (TS1M2) or SAS® 9.4M0 (TS1M0) – SAS® 9.4M2 (TS1M2), consider upgrading to a later release to leverage enhanced capabilities and a more robust support experience. If you are unable to upgrade at this time, contact SAS Technical Support for the Java update.

If you are using SAS 9.4M3 – SAS 9.4M8 on Solaris x64 or Solaris 64-bit, contact SAS Technical Support for the Java update.

Preparatory Steps Before You Begin to Download a Java Update

Before you begin the download process, follow these preliminary steps:

  1. Identify your product version of Base SAS® software by executing the following code in SAS:

    proc product_status;
    run;

  2. You are required to have a SAS profile to download these updates. If you do not have a SAS profile, create one using the SAS Profile Sign in page.

Download the Latest JRE Update

To download the latest SAS Private JRE update, do the following:

  1. Click the Downloads tab in this SAS Note, and then click the Updates for Java 11, Updates for Java 8, or Updates for Java 7 link that corresponds to your Base SAS software.
  2. The Downloads web page appears. On the Version / Release tab, click the link for the operating system version that you use to run Base SAS.
  3. For your chosen download, read and follow the instructions to correctly deploy the Java updates.
    Note: For the download to proceed successfully, you must enter your SAS site number and accept the license terms when prompted to do so.
  4. Repeat Steps 1, 2, and 3 for all client and server machines in your SAS architecture.

If you are using version 1.7.0_161 of the SAS Private JRE, you might be affected by a rendering issue for a few specific graphic displays. For detailed information, see SAS Note 62260. To address this issue, download and install SAS Private JRE 1.7.0_181. When you update SAS 9.4M0 through SAS® 9.4M3 (TS1M3) for SAS Environment Manager on 1.7.0_161 on HP-UX for Itanium, you must perform the manual update documented in SAS Note 61392.

C SAS reviewed the October 2016 update release (Java 1.7.0_121) and determined that the issues addressed in this update do not impact SAS Server environments. SAS customers should continue to run Java 1.7.0_111 on SAS 9.3 and 9.4 systems.

D SAS reviewed the January 2016 update release (Java 1.7.0_95) and determined that the issues addressed in this update do not impact SAS Server environments.
