Usage Note 51195: Certain Java service refresh levels are not currently supported by SAS® in the z/OS operating environment
Following the lead set by Oracle, IBM made changes to the implementation of the Runtime.exec API that appears in Java under z/OS.
These service refresh (SR) levels might cause failures during SAS installation and configuration:
- Java 1.6.0 SR14 and SR15
- Java 1.6.0.1 SR6 and SR7
- Java 1.7.0 SR5 and SR6
- Java 1.7.1 initial release
Note: All Java releases for z/OS will use 31-bit.
Note: Beginning with SAS® 9.4M6 (TS1M6), which was generally available in the fourth quarter of 2018, the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is based on Java 8 technology. SAS® 9.4 versions that precede SAS 9.4M6 use a JRE that is based on Java 7. Java 6 is supported only in SAS® 9.3
Note: The only Java release that is supported in SAS 9.4M6 and above is Java 1.8.0, SR5 and builddate 20180922 or later.
SAS recommends that you use one of the following Java releases and SR levels, because these levels incorporate the fix for CMVC IV54864, which is needed to invoke Java from SAS:
- Java 1.6.0 SR16 or later
- Java 1.6.0.1 SR8 or later
- Java 1.7.0 SR7 or later
- Java 1.7.1 SR1 or later
- Java 1.8.0 SR5 or later (see Note above)
If you have an existing installation and need to use any of these Java SR levels, follow the directions documented in SAS Note 51008, "Java versions 1.6.0.1 SR6, 1.6.0.0 SR14, 1.7.0.0 SR5, and 1.7.1 initial release and later on z/OS systems might cause errors in SAS® programming."
