For a list of Windows operating environments that support SAS products, see Supported Operating Environments for Windows.
The following SAS Notes and user documentation provide information about specific Windows operating environments:
For information about SAS 9.2 (TS2M0) or higher, see SAS Note 33144, "Frequently asked questions about SAS 9.2®" (TS2M0).
To determine the release of your SAS 9.2 installation, see SAS Note 35627, "Determining your SAS® 9.2 release."
For an overview of maintenance releases for SAS 9.2, see Maintenance Release Announcement for SAS 9.2.
When you receive an order for a maintenance release update, you should perform a backup before installing the update. The update overwrites the existing SAS installation, but your user settings are stored in the configuration file or user registry. For more information about applying a maintenance release, see "Assess Your Current SAS Deployment" at Maintenance Release Announcement for SAS 9.2.
The default location for the SAS installation data (SID) file is c:\SAS Software Depot\sid_files. If you have received media, the SID file is on the first disk of that installation media.
For information about naming conventions of the SID file, see SAS Note 32961, "Changes in the SAS® installation data file (SID file) naming conventions and license renewal tool for SAS® 9.2."
For information about the SAS Software Depot, see SAS Note 39379, "Documentation and frequently asked questions for the SAS® Software Depot."
If you have a planned-installation package and intend to install SAS Foundation 9.2 and SAS Enterprise Guide 4.2 for local use only, see SAS Note 35631, "Installing SAS® Foundation 9.2 (TS2M0) and SAS® Enterprise Guide® 4.2 when you have a planned-installation package."
!SASROOT directory
Sasuser (SAS System user profile) folder
Work folder (!Temp)
To find the settings for ?CSIDL and !TEMP that are defined in the sasv9.cfg file for SASUSER= and WORK= options, see SAS Note 31747, "General questions about installing SAS® 9.2 in a Windows operating environment."
SAS Note 40044: Maintenance might not be applied to a SAS Software Depot for client users when SAS/ETS® software is included in the order
The future for client user and personal user depots, for more details see SAS Note 40426: The SAS® 9.3 depot subsetting option replaces the client and server installation model used by earlier SAS® releases for Windows environments.
The following note provides information about languages included during installations of SAS:
SAS Installation Data File
The following SAS Notes provide information about issues with the SAS installation data file:
- SAS Note 34773, "During a SAS® 9.2 installation, the SAS installation data file might be rejected with an error that points to the selected SAS software order"
- SAS Note 35136, "The SAS® 9.2 install might produce invalid SAS installation data file (SID file) error, and the default SID file is C:\SAS Installation Data"
- SAS Note 36475, "An attempt to install SAS® 9.2 fails with an error pointing to a problem with the SAS installation data file"
SAS® Deployment Wizard
For issues when you use the SAS Deployment Wizard to install SAS 9.2, see the following notes:
- SAS Note 36395, "When using the SAS® Deployment Wizard to configure a SAS® 9.2 installation, configuration fails with an error"
- SAS Note: 33598, "The SAS® Deployment Wizard might start and then stop when you are installing SAS® 9.2 in a Microsoft Windows operating environment"
System Requirements Wizard
During an installation of SAS, the System Requirements Wizard displays an error message. In this instance, you should stop the installation. To troubleshoot the error message, the following SAS Notes provide information about known issues:
- SAS Note 33939, "During the System Requirements Wizard installation, the JRE might fail during a SAS® 9.2 installation on the Windows operating system"
- SAS Note 31316, "The license renewal tool fails to update licenses on SAS® 9.2 installations for client users (Admin Client) in Windows operating environments"
- SAS Note 33867, "When installing SAS® 9.2 on Windows, a critical error might occur while loading SAS product data and cause the setup to fail"
- SAS Note 37370, "An Install Failure dialog box displays ‘An error has occurred while processing installation package files‘ when you install SAS® 9.2 Foundation"
Media Installation
When you are installing SAS from media, you might not have the option to install SAS from the media. This issue might happen if you have more than one piece of media or if you have a planning order.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Select the option to create a SAS Software Depot.
- Create the depot either on a network share location, an external hard drive, USB drive, or the local PC.
- Run setup.exe from the depot and the option to Install SAS Software appears.
In SAS 9.2 (TS1M0), if you have multiple CDs or DVDs, you must create a SAS Software Depot first. Once the SAS Software Depot is created, run setup.exe to receive the option Install SAS Software.
In SAS 9.2 TS2M0 or later releases, you are not required to create a SAS Software Depot from media before you install SAS Foundation. For more information about installing SAS from DVD media, see SAS Note 35841, "Installing SAS® Foundation 9.2 directly from DVD media."Renew SAS Software Tool
If the renew SAS software tool is not working in Windows Vista, see SAS Note 31290, "Renewing your license on a SAS® 9.2 personal installation on Windows Vista with the Renew SAS Software tool."
Using Logs to Troubleshoot Installation Issues
The SAS logs can be a resource for troubleshooting issues. For more information about logs, see the following resources:
- SAS Note 35426, "Logs that can be used to troubleshoot the SAS® 9.2 (TS2M0) installations"
- SAS Note 31627, "Logs that can be used to troubleshoot the SAS® 9.2 TS2M0 (TS1M0) installations"
- SAS® 9.2 Logging Configuration and Programming Reference
SAS® 9.1 File Type Registrations Removed after an Upgrade
When you upgrade from SAS 9.1 to SAS 9.2, the menu options for SAS 9.1 might be removed. In Windows Explorer, right-click a file with a .sas, a .sas7bdat, or another SAS file extension. Only SAS 9.2 menu options might be listed.
For information about this issue and a workaround, see SAS Note 32558, "Installing SAS® 9.2 after SAS® 9.1 removes SAS 9.1 file type registrations such as 'Open with SAS 9.1'".
