Installation Note 32558: Installing SAS® 9.2 after SAS® 9.1 removes SAS® 9.1 file type registrations such as "Open with SAS® 9.1"
If you install SAS 9.2 after installing SAS 9.1 on a PC and then in Microsoft Windows Explorer, right-click on files with a .sas, .sas7bdat extension, or another SAS extension, SAS 9.1 menu options are NOT listed and only SAS 9.2 menu options are listed:
- SAS 9.1 options NOT listed include Open with SAS 9.1, Batch Submit with SAS 9.1, and Submit with SAS 9.1, which were removed during the SAS 9.2 installation.
- SAS 9.2 options listed include Open with SAS 9.2, Batch Submit with SAS 9.2, and Submit with SAS 9.2.
- In addition, if you choose Open With and select SAS 9.1 for Windows, these actions open the SAS files in SAS 9.2 and not in SAS 9.1.
- If you have two releases of SAS installed, you can only associate SAS file types with one installed SAS version, such as SAS 9.1.3 or SAS 9.2, but not both.
Workaround for opening files in SAS 9.1 instead of SAS 9.2
- Invoke SAS 9.1.
- Select File ► Open Program to open a .sas file or .log file.
Alternatively, to open a SAS data set, if a SAS LIBRARY does not exist, issue a LIBNAME statement to the folder where the data set resides. Then, double-click Libraries in SAS Explorer, select the library name to see all data sets, and double-click the data set to open it.
- If you primarily want to open SAS files from Windows Explorer in SAS 9.1 instead of SAS 9.2, you can change the default to SAS 9.1. However, this will remove SAS 9.2 options.
Re-registering SAS file types to other SAS releases
- To re-register SAS file types to SAS 8.2 or SAS 9.1, see SAS Note 16399 "Registering file types for SAS® 8 and SAS®9
".
- To re-register SAS file types to SAS 9.2, see SAS Note 32464 "Registering file types via the SAS Filetype Registration Utility for SAS® 9.2 Phase 1 and SAS® Enterprise Guide®".

For software releases that are not yet generally available, the Fixed
Release is the software release in which the problem is planned to be
fixed.
During SAS 9.2 installation, the register filetypes process eliminates the SAS 9.1 options if previous releases of SAS are on the same machine. Currently, you can only associate SAS file types with SAS 9.2 or another installed SAS version, such as SAS 9.1.3, but not both.
