Installation Note 37370: An Install Failure dialog box displays "An error has occurred while processing installation package files" when you install SAS® 9.2 Foundation

DetailsAboutRate It

When you install SAS 9.2 (TS2M0), an error message might appear when you access a SAS Software Depot on a non-native file system or if the directory path has more than 260 characters. For example, this message might display if you access a SAS Software Depot from Windows on a UNIX file system:

When you examine the sasinstall.log file (for example, c:\program files\sas\installmisc\installlogs\9.2\sasinstall_10062009_092513.log), you might find the following error message:

PROCFILES: --> The following error occurred while installing c:\program
files\sas\sasversionedjarrepository\9.2\eclipse\plugins\sas.finserv.
creditfraud.authentication. commonlogon.nls_300200.0.0.20090930190000_
d2rapt30\sas.finserv.creditfraud.authentication.commonlogon.nls.jar:
-2147024894, The system cannot find the file specified.

These messages can appear for the following reasons:

  • The installation is being performed from a non-native file system. For example, you are installing from a UNIX file system, which is not native to Windows. The file systems on the server have a translation layer or interface, such as Samba, that enables a Windows operating system to read them.
  • There is a fully qualified path name that exceeds the maximum allowable length. The Windows shell API that is used by all Windows applications limits the maximum total path length to 260 characters.

See SAS Note 36058 "The installation might fail when you install SAS 9.2® Foundation from a SAS Software Depot if the fully qualified path name is too long" for information about acceptable lenght limits for path names.

See the Microsoft article, "File Names, Paths, and Namespaces", for detailed information about filenames, paths, and namespaces.

To correct this issue, create the SAS Software Depot on one of the following locations:

  • a native file system
  • the local machine
  • a shared network location with a shorter path name (for example, X:\SAS Software Depot or X:\SSD_92)
