Overview of Creating a New Portlet

You can create your own portlets to display the content of your choice. You can use either of the following methods to create a portlet:
When you first create a new portlet, its contents are empty. To specify the portlet's contents, see Specify the Contents of a New Portlet.

Types of Portlets That You Can Create

You can create the following types of portlets:
Collection portlet
Contains a list of content items. The items can be of any type or combination of types.
Report portlet
Displays the results of a SAS report.
URL display portlet
Accesses a specific URL and displays the returned information inside the portlet's borders.
WebDAV content portlet
Displays the contents of an HTML fragment that is stored in a WebDAV repository.
WebDAV graph portlet
Displays a graph that uses data from a WebDAV repository.
WebDAV navigator portlet
Enables you to view files that are stored in a hierarchical (tree) arrangement of folders and subfolders in a WebDAV repository.
Note: Depending on the software that is installed at your site, you might be able to create additional portlets.
The SAS Information Delivery Portal provides several predefined portlets. You do not create these portlets, but you can search for and add them to your portal pages. For more information, see Add a Predefined Portlet to a Page.

Create a Portlet and Add It to a Page

To create a portlet and add it to a page, follow these steps:
  1. Navigate to the page that you want to add the portlet to.
  2. Click Customizethen selectEdit Pagethen selectEdit Page Content.
  3. On the Edit Page Content page, click Add Portlets.
  4. On the Create tab of the Add Portlets page, select the type of portlet that you want to create. See Types of Portlets That You Can Create.
  5. Enter descriptive information about the portlet:
    Name
    Short name that appears in the title area at the top of the portlet.
    Description
    Short description that appears with the portlet in search results.
    Keywords
    Single words that you or other users can use to search for this portlet. Use spaces to separate keywords from one another.
    Note: To ensure efficient searching, develop a standard list of keywords and use these keywords consistently.
  6. If you are a content administrator, then you can specify a location (group) with which to share the portlet. For more information, see Share a Portlet.
  7. Click Add.
    A message appears, indicating that a new portlet was added.
  8. If you want to create additional portlets, repeat steps 4 through 7. When you are finished creating new portlets, click Done.
  9. On the Edit Page Content page, specify where the new portlets are to appear on the page as follows:
    • If you are using a column layout, you can move the portlets to different columns or to different positions within the columns.
    • If you are using a grid layout, specify where you want each portlet to appear by selecting the portlet names in the drop-down boxes for the appropriate cells.

  10. Click OK. The original page is displayed, with the new portlets added.

Create a New Portlet Without Adding it to a Page

To create a new portlet without adding it to a page, follow these steps:
  1. Click Optionsthen selectCreate New Content.
  2. On the Create New Content page, click Portlet, and then click Create.
  3. On the Create a New Portlet page, select the type of portlet that you want to create. See Types of Portlets That You Can Create.
  4. Enter descriptive information about the portlet:
    Name
    Short name that appears in the title area at the top of the portlet.
    Description
    Short description that appears with the portlet in search results.
    Keywords
    Single words that you or other users can use to search for this portlet. Use spaces to separate keywords from one another.
    Note: To ensure efficient searching, develop a standard list of keywords and use these keywords consistently.
  5. If you are a content administrator, then you can specify a location (group) with which to share the portlet. For more information, see Share a Portlet.
  6. Click Create. A message appears, indicating that the portlet was created and is available to be added to a page.
  7. To create additional portlets, repeat steps 3 through 6.
  8. When you are finished creating portlets, click Done. On the Create New Content page, click Done again.
To see the new portlet, you must add it to a page. See Add a Predefined Portlet to a Page.

Specify the Contents of a New Portlet
