Main Steps to Edit the Contents of a Page

To specify or change the contents of a page, follow these main steps:

Specify the layout of the page.
Specify which portlets are to be displayed on the page and how the portlets are to be arranged. Use either of the following methods:
- Specify the portlets in a column layout.
- Specify the portlets in a grid layout.

Note: If a page has been shared with a group, the page can be edited only by a user who is designated as a content administrator for the group. A shared page has the label Shared, Default, or Persistent in the upper right corner, followed by the name of the group.

Specify the Page Layout

To specify the layout of a page, follow these steps:

Navigate to the page whose contents you want to edit.
Click CustomizeEdit PageEdit Page Content.
Specify the following information on the Edit Page Content page:
Layout

Select one of the following layout options:

By column

Portlets are arranged on the page in one column, two columns, or three columns. For example, this diagram shows a layout with three columns:

By grid

Portlets are arranged on the page by row and column. For example, this diagram shows a layout with three rows and three columns:

In a grid layout, portlets can span rows or columns as needed.

Number of columns

Click 1, 2, or 3 to specify the number of columns in which you want portlets to be displayed on the page.

Column width

For each column, enter the percentage of the page width that each column is to occupy. The percentages should add up to 100. (If they do not add up to 100, the portal makes the necessary adjustments according to standard HTML rules.) If you want the columns to be equal, use the default values.

Note: These percentages suggest how the portlets fit on a page, but are not absolute column widths. Some portlets require a minimum width in order to display, regardless of the percentage that is associated with the portlet's column. In addition, a portlet's size can vary based on the content it contains. If a particular portlet cannot fit within a column, then the specified percentage for a column is overridden by the width that is actually required to display the portlet.
Portlet layout
Specify which portlets are to be displayed on the page and how the portlets are to be arranged. For details, see one of the following topics:

Click OK when you are finished.

Specify the Portlet Layout in Columns

First, specify the page layout. If you selected a column layout, then follow these steps to specify how portlets are to be arranged in the columns:

If portlets have already been specified for the page, these portlets are listed in the boxes below each column heading. To add more portlets to the page, click Add Portlets. On the Add Portlets page, you can do either of the following:
- Create a new portlet to add to the page. For instructions, see Create a Portlet and Add It to a Page.
- Search for a predefined portlet to add to the page. For instructions, see Add a Predefined Portlet to a Page.
Remove any portlets that you do not want to be displayed on the page. To remove a portlet, click on the portlet's name to highlight it, and then click the remove icon .

The portlet is removed from your page. However, it remains available in case you decide to add it again later.
Specify which portlets are to appear in which columns. To move a portlet from one column to another, follow these steps:
- Click a portlet name to highlight it.
- Click the right arrow to move the portlet to the next column to the right. Click the left arrow to move the portlet to the next column to the left.
Specify the order of the portlets within each column, as follows:
- Click a portlet name to highlight it.
- Click the up arrow to move the portlet to a higher position in the column, or click the down arrow to move the portlet to a lower position.
Click OK when you are finished.

Specify the Portlet Layout in a Grid

First, specify the page layout. If you selected a grid layout, then follow these steps to specify how portlets are to be arranged in the grid:

If portlets have already been specified for the page, these portlets are listed in the boxes below each column heading. To add more portlets to the page, click Add Portlets. On the Add Portlets page, you can do either of the following:
- Create a new portlet to add to the page. For instructions, see Create a Portlet and Add It to a Page.
- Search for a predefined portlet to add to the page. For instructions, see Add a Predefined Portlet to a Page.
Remove any portlets that you do not want to be displayed on the page. To remove a portlet, click on the portlet's name in the Portlets box, and then click the remove icon .

The portlet is removed from your page. However, it remains available in case you decide to add it again later.
Specify the number of rows in which you want the portlets to be displayed, as follows:
- To add a new row, click Add Row. A new, empty row appears at the bottom of the list.
- To delete a row, click the Delete row icon to the right of the row.
  
  Note: The page must contain at least one row. Therefore, you cannot delete Row 1.
In the drop-down box in each cell (row and column) of the grid, select the portlet that is to be displayed. Follow these guidelines:
- The layout must include all of the portlets that appear in the list of Available portlets. (If the list includes a portlet that you do not want to display on the page, then remove the portlet as described in Step 2.)
- If you want a cell to remain empty, then select Empty.
- If you want a portlet to span multiple rows or multiple columns, then specify the same portlet in contiguous cells in the form of a rectangle. For an example, see Example: Portlet Layout in a Grid.
Click OK when you are finished.

If you specified an invalid portlet layout, an error message is displayed. If this occurs, modify the layout, and click OK again.

Example: Portlet Layout in a Grid

The following examples show portlets that span multiple rows or multiple columns.

The following entries specify that Portlet 2 is to span Columns 2 and 3, and that Portlet 3 is to span Rows 2 and 3:
