Support for Java Runtime Environments (JREs) in SAS® Viya® 3.5
Support for JREs
The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) must be installed on every machine in your deployment. If you are installing SAS Common Planning Service (which is included in SAS Markdown Optimization, SAS Financial Planning, SAS Assortment Planning, and SAS Demand Planning), you also need to install the Java Development Kit (JDK). The following versions are supported:
- Azul Zulu version 1.8.0_121 and later within 1.8.
- Oracle JRE SE version 1.8.0_161 and later within 1.8.
- OpenJDK version 1.8.0_121 and later within 1.8.
Important: SAS Visual Investigator 10.8 with Hot Fix 17 (available in March, 2026) and later require Java 11, Java 17, or Java 21 for the OpenSearch component. SAS Visual Investigator 10.8 with Hot Fix 16 requires Java 11 for this purpose. For additional information and assistance with this requirement, see SAS Knowledge Base article KB0043939. The Java section of the SAS Viya 3.5 System Requirements provides details about earlier hot fixes.
SAS recommends using the most recent releases of JRE and JDK 1.8.x in order to receive the latest security and bug fixes.
Version 1.8.0_272 of OpenJDK and Azul Zulu is affected by a known bug that can cause the JVM to terminate unexpectedly. See SAS Note 67681 for details.
To avoid a problem with rendering that affects a selected set of fonts in Traditional Chinese, Korean and Japanese locales, use Oracle JRE instead of OpenJDK. As a workaround, you can make a change to the registry to support an alternate set of fonts with OpenJDK. You must also download and install the alternative fonts. For more information, refer to SAS Note 58855.
