Installation Note 42646: Troubleshooting the SAS® 9.3 installation process in a Windows operating environment

When you install SAS 9.3, several files are created that can help you troubleshoot any installation and configuration issue that might occur. The most important files are

If you open a track with SAS Technical Support, be sure to include these files in order to facilitate the troubleshooting process. If only some of these files are available, send what you have and document that these are the only files that were created.

The following table shows where you can find the relevant files.

Logs That Are Created in the SAS InstallMisc Directory

For SAS 9.3, several logs are created in the SAS InstallMisc Directory (that is, c:Program Files\SASHome\InstallMisc\InstallLogs\9.3). For example:

  • C:\Program Files\SASHome\InstallMisc\InstallLogs\IT_date-time-stamp.log

    Note: The IT log provides very extensive and detailed error messages that along with the information from the SDW.log file and are extremely important and helpful in narrowing down installation issues.

  • C:\Program Files\SASHome\InstallMisc\InstallLogs\deploymentsummary.html

    The DeploymentSummary_date-installed_time-installed.html file: This file provides a summary of the installation, including whether the installation was successful or whether it completed with warning or error messages. Here is a sample of what it might contain:

Files That Are Created in the SASDeploymentWizard Directory

For SAS 9.3, several files are created in the SASDeploymentWizard directory (that is, C:\Users\sas\AppData\Local\SAS\SASDeploymentWizard). Here are some of the files that are stored in this directory:

The sdwprefs.txt file: This file contains the choices or preferences that you used during the installation (for example, the location of the SASHOME directory). Here is an example of what it might contain:

The SDW_sysinfo_date-installed_time-installed.dat file (for example, SDW_sysinfo_20090327_012345.dat) file: This file contains the information about the system and the SAS products that are installed on your system. Here is an example of what it might contain:

System Information (SYSTEM.info)

In addition, send the System Information by using these steps:

  1. Select Start ► Run and type msinfo32.exe.
  2. When the system information appears, select File ► Save and type system for the name and then send the system.nfo file that is created.

Additional Logs That SAS Technical Support Uses to Help You

For SAS 9.3, here are some additional logs that SAS Technical Support might use to help when you have performed a planned installation and run into problems:

  • The Configuration Logs, in ConfigDir\LevelDir\Logs\Configure

    For example: C:\SAS\Config\Lev1\Logs\Configure

  • The plan file, properties files, and .bat files used for configuration, in ConfigDir\LevelDir\Utilities
  • For example: C:\SAS\Config\Lev1\Utilities

    The plan.xml will be named plan.year-month-day-hour-minute.xml

    For example: plan.2011-03-17-03.33.xml

  • The Server Logs:
  • The logs for SAS server are found in their respective configuration directories. For example, the metadata server logs are found here:

    ConfigDir\LevelDir\SASMeta\MetadataServer\Logs

    For example: C:\SAS\Config\Lev1\SASMeta\MetadataServer\Logs

  • The Web Application Logs:
  • The logs for Web applications are typically found here:

  • The Instructions.html, the DeploymentSummary.html, and the ConfigurationErrors.html, which are found here:
  • ConfigDir\LevelDir\Documents
