Early in 2000 one of our customers in Chicago contacted us and asked if Version 1 would provide relief for their databases that were soon going to reach the current file size upper limits. The answer was yes -- by going to VSAM as a file format, the maximum size of a file increased to nearly 4.3 billion bytes, which is how big database File 6 can be in Version 1. (And with extended format VSAM, you can allocate File 6 to be up to 8,589,934,588 bytes.)
Version 1 was ready for production status, but our new publications were not, so the decision was made to delay production release until the new pubs were ready. This didn't stop us from sending a beta version of SYSTEM 2000 to our customer, however.
They installed Version 1 shortly after receiving it, and have been running a test system since April. They uncovered a couple of minor problems for us, but otherwise have had a smooth transition from R12.0 to V1, and are looking forward to receiving the final release of V1 when it is shipped to all sites.
In addition to the beta site, we here at SAS have been running Version 1 in production since May of this year. All our production databases were converted, so we've had six months with Version 1.
