Usage Note 14450: Metadata repositories should be backed up correctly and often

DetailsAboutRate It

Partial or incomplete backups of the metadata repository might result in the inability to restore the repository. Restoration might be required in the event of a corrupt repository.

To successfully back up the metadata server, the server must be stopped or paused. If the server is not stopped or paused, the resulting backup might be unusable. The backup can be done by manually stopping the server, running backup software or Operating backup commands, or by following the instructions in the links below.

To ensure an accurate backup snapshot, you should pause all repositories on the server, as well as the repository manager, and back them up together as a set, or at least back up all repositories that have dependencies defined between them.

For backup instructions, see

Backing Up and Restoring the SAS Metadata Server in the SAS Intelligence Platform: System Administration Guide.

The %OMABAKUP macro issues the pause and resume. When using this macro, you do not need to manually pause and resume the metadata server. Pause and Resume, or Stop and Start is required if doing system level backups.

When a repository becomes corrupt, a backup can be used to restore to the point at which the backup was taken. If no backup exists or the backup was not done properly, completely rebuilding the repository may be necessary.
