SAS 9.2 Integration with IBM Tivoli® Monitoring 6

The SAS® Enterprise Business Intelligence Platform and SAS® Business Solutions provide intelligence that drives many business activities. To keep business data flowing smoothly throughout the enterprise, it is critical that business IT administrators are able to actively monitor the underlying systems to detect and respond to anomalies in the proper functioning of critical data and analytical services.

The Enterprise Management Integration Team has developed a sample integration of the SAS® 9.2 Enterprise Business Intelligence servers with IBM® Tivoli® Monitoring 6.2 running on IBM AIX 5.3. The supplied integration tools are written in standard scripting language and Java, making them portable to other UNIX-like operating systems.

Using Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server (TEMS), Tivoli Enterprise Portal Server (TEPS), and Tivoli Universal Agent (UA), the activity logs for SAS Metadata Server, SAS OLAP Server, and others can be monitored for unexpected events in server operation or anomalies such as login authorization failures. SAS server processes are monitored for availability and server state (if applicable). Events that exceed user-defined thresholds are reported to TEMS/TEPS where administrators can access and respond to them using a standard TEP client console.

The integration model we have developed is intended to serve as a base from which customers can develop monitoring "situations" and responses suitable for their business environments. SAS supplies a combination of custom helper shell scripts and metafile generation scripts to configure SAS server monitoring using standard IBM Tivoli Universal Agent data providers. This allows a high degree of user customization for particular business needs using tools that are familiar to an experienced Tivoli adminstrator.

SAS 9.1.3 Integration with IBM Tivoli®

The SAS® Intelligence Platform and SAS® Business Solutions provide intelligence that drives many business activities. To keep business data flowing smoothly throughout the enterprise, it is critical that business IT administrators are able to actively monitor the underlying systems to detect and respond to anomalies in the proper functioning of critical data and analytical services.

We are working to integrate the SAS® 9.1.3 Intelligence Platform servers with IBM® Tivoli® Monitoring 5.1.2 and IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console® 3.9 running on IBM AIX 5.3.

Using Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC), the activity logs for SAS Metadata Server, SAS OLAP Server, SAS Object Spawner, and SAS Stored Process Server are monitored for unexpected events in server operation or anomalies such as login authorization failures. Using IBM Tivoli Monitoring, SAS server processes are monitored for availability and computer resource utilization. Events that exceed user-defined thresholds are reported to the Tivoli Event Server where administrators can access and respond to them using a standard TEC Event Viewer.

The integration model we have developed is intended to serve as a base from which customers can develop monitoring rules and responses suitable for their business environments. SAS supplies a combination of custom shell scripts and IBM rule base and resource model definitions to perform SAS server monitoring using standard IBM event adaptors. This allows a high degree of user customization for particular business needs using tools that are familiar to an experienced Tivoli adminstrator.
