HP OpenView Operations® for Windows with SAS® 9.2
Monitoring SAS® 9.2 Enterprise Business Intelligence (BI) using HP OpenView Operations for Windows
The SAS 9 Enterprise BI Platform and SAS Business Solutions provide intelligence that drives many business activities. To keep business data flowing smoothly throughout the enterprise, it is critical that business IT administrators are able to actively monitor the underlying systems to detect and respond to anomalies in the proper functioning of critical data and analytical services.
The Enterprise Management Integration Team has developed a sample Smart Plug-In (SPI) integration of the SAS 9.2 Enterprise BI servers with HP OpenView Operations 7.x for Windows. The SPI provides Policies, Tools, and Instrumentation to allow monitoring of SAS 9.2 EBI deployments running on Microsoft Windows and HP UX environments. The supplied HP UX tools are written in standard UNIX® scripting language, making them portable to other UNIX-like operating systems.
The SPI for SAS 9.2 enables the following features:
- Monitoring SAS BI Server state and status, to include alert features
- Monitoring SAS BI Server Logs for error and warning conditions or unexpected events in server operation such as login authorization failures
- Monitoring of the SAS 9.2 Web Applications, SAS Middle-Tier, through HTTP status checking
- User-defined thresholds for alert events
- Integration with the Openview Operations for Windows management server and OpenView Console
- Administration of the SAS BI Servers through the OpenView Console interfaces
The SPI for SAS 9.2 was designed to co-exist with deployments of the SPI for SAS 9.1.3. The SAS 9.2 instance enables unique naming methods for Policies, Tools, Instrumentation, Service IDs, and OVOW console messages to distinguish from events issued by the SPI for SAS 9.1.3

Monitoring SAS®9 Intelligence Platform using HP OpenView Operations for Windows

Smart Plug-In (SPI) for SAS
HP OpenView Operations for Windows is extensible through the Smart Plug-In (SPI) feature. The SPI for SAS provides policies and tools to enable SAS Intelligence Platform monitoring. Included are tools for:
- Connect Server
- Metadata Server
- Object Spawner
- OLAP Server
- Share Server
- Stored Process Server
The tools allow the IT operator to obtain the current status, view current log, stop and start servers. The policies provide monitoring capabilities to detect errors and warnings, status changes, specific user activity, user authentication failure, client connect and disconnect. This information is surfaced through the Operations console.
