Problem Note 66193: Joining multiple DBMS tables might result in performance issues because some of the processing is done in SAS® rather than in the database

DetailsHotfixAboutRate It

In Base SAS® software, slower performance might occur when you run an SQL procedure query and the following conditions exist:

  • You create view1, which references a database management system (DBMS) table. The view includes DISTINCT along with the selection of multiple variables, and you rename one of the variables via a SELECT clause.

  • You create view2 based on view1. In view2, you select the renamed variable and do the following:
    • either rename it to the same name or include the label= modifier
    • include a summary function on another variable that appeared in the SELECT clause in view1
    • include a GROUP BY clause that contains the renamed variable from view1
  • You create view3 based on view2. In view3, you select only the renamed variable from view1.

  • You create a table where you join view1 and view3 based on the renamed variable being equal and select the renamed variable from view1.

  • You are running one of the following versions:
    • SAS® 9.4M4 (TS1M4) with any of these Base SAS hot fixes: A3Z047, A3Z058, or A3Z067
    • SAS® 9.4M5 (TS1M5) with any of the following Base SAS hot fixes: B6Q027,B6Q044, B6Q045, B6Q056, B6Q071, B6Q073, B6Q076, or B6Q087
    • SAS® 9.4M6 (TS1M6)

In this scenario, instead of the entire query being passed to the database, only a portion is passed and the rest of the query is performed by SAS.
