Problem Note 59811: SAS® Studio might stop responding or have performance issues when you open a table containing a large number of columns

DetailsHotfixAboutRate It

In SAS Studio 3.6 or earlier, SAS Studio opens a table in the table viewer with all columns selected to display.

When you open a table in the table viewer that contains a large number of columns, SAS Studio might stop responding or show very slow performance. This behavior is much more pronounced with Microsoft Internet Explorer than it is with other browsers.

To determine whether you are running SAS Studio 3.6 and have any hot fixes applied, do the following:

In SAS Studio, go to ? ► About SAS Studio and look at the release and the build date.

If you see Release: 3.6, check the build date:

  • November 8, 2016:  no hot fixes have been applied
  • January 12, 2017:  the first hot fix has been applied
  • May 2017:  the second hot fix has been applied

The first hot fix for SAS Studio 3.6 results in the following behavior:

If you try to Select all columns and there are more than 100 columns in the table, you are prevented from doing so and a message is displayed.  You can use Select all to deselect all columns.

If you have set the Start Up Preference to

  • If you had selected up to and including 100 columns, the table opens with the same columns selected.
  • If you had selected more than 100 columns,

The second hot fix for SAS Studio 3.6 (available on the Hot Fix tab above) results in the following behavior:

The table viewer opens with only the first 30 columns selected.  You can select more columns to display after the table is opened.  You might see performance issues as you increase the number of columns.

If you try to Select all columns and there are more than 100 columns in the table, you are prompted with a warning and allowed to open all if you choose to do so.

  • If you are using any other browser and more than 100 columns were selected at sign out, the column selection is retained.

Click the Hot Fix tab in this note to access the hot fix for this issue for SAS Studio Basic and SAS Studio Mid-Tier editions.  Use the Downloads page to upgrade SAS Studio Single-User Edition to the latest release, including hot fixes.

The hot fix that you link to on the Hot Fix tab is the second hot fix for this issue.  When selecting the hot fix to download and apply, you must match the product release in your deployment registry.  If you have installed previous hot fixes to upgrade your SAS Studio release, the value in the deployment registry might be different from the information in ? ► About SAS Studio in the product.  To find your product release, follow the instructions in SAS KB0036131 , "Using the ViewRegistry Report and other methods to determine the SAS® 9.2 and later software releases and hot fixes that are installed", to generate a SAS Deployment Registry report.  Then verify that the appropriate product releases are installed on your system.  The product release number in the Registry report should match the hot fix product release number that is installed on each machine.
