Usage Note 57078: High CPU usage might occur during an upgrade to SAS® Visual Analytics 7.3

DetailsAboutRate It

During an upgrade from SAS Visual Analytics 7.1 or 7.2 to release 7.3, you might notice high CPU usage when the SAS® Web Application Server starts. This condition might cause the application server processes to crash.

Beginning with SAS Visual Analytics 7.3, rules are automatically created to archive audit records that are older than 30 days. The first time SAS Visual Analytics 7.3 is started, it begins to archive audit records that are based on these rules. If you did not archive audit records before upgrading to version 7.3, this archiving process can take a very long time to complete. If you have millions of records, this process could potentially crash your application servers.

Auditing for SAS Visual Analytics was introduced in release 7.1. Even if you do not explicitly enable auditing for SAS Visual Analytics, actions such as logons and log offs are still written to SAS® Web Infrastructure Platform database. After you explicitly enable auditing in SAS Visual Analytics, audit records specific to SAS Visual Analytics are generated.

To avoid this problem, enable archiving for audit records in the environment where SAS Visual Analytics is deployed before you attempt to upgrade. For information about archiving, see the topic Archive Process for Audit Records in the SAS 9.4 Intelligence Platform: Middle-Tier Administration Guide.

If you encounter this problem, you can do one of the following:

  • Wait for the process to complete.
  • Manually remove records from the SAS Web Infrastructure database. Records must be removed from the sas_audit and sas_audit_entry tables.
