Overview

This sample creates the following Bar Chart With Bullet indicator as displayed on a dashboard. The Bar Chart With Bullet display type produces a bar chart in which each bar has a bullet indicator that displays additional information about the data that makes up the bar.

Before you begin

This sample uses the SASHELP.CLASS table, displaying the HEIGHT and WEIGHT. Before you can create the indicator, you must create the following supporting objects.

• an indicator data object based on a SQL query of SASHELP.CLASS
• a range based on SASHELP.CLASS and the WEIGHT column

Create the indicator

1. To create the Bar Chart With Bullet indicator, select File ► New ► Indicator to open the Create an Indicator dialog box.
2. For the name, enter Bar Chart With Bullet.
3. From the Display type list, select Bar Chart With Bullet.
4. For Indicator Data and Range properties, click Browse to navigate to the folders that contain the indicator data object and range that you created previously.
5. At this point, the Create an Indicator dialog box should look like the following display.



Click OK to enter design mode for the indicator. The Object, Preview, and Properties panels appear in the BI Dashboard Designer, as shown in the following display.



6. To allow for more screen space when working with the indicator, click the button to hide the Objects panel.
7. Specify the following Role Mapping properties.
• Set Range value to WEIGHT.
• Set X axis value to NAME.
• Set Bar value to HEIGHT.
• Set Bullet value to WEIGHT.

When you are done, a chart (the indicator) appears in the Preview panel.

8. Click the indicator to select it, and then drag the border to make it larger. Notice that the Width and Height settings change in the Properties panel. Set the Width=600 and Height=400.

Customize the indicator

Indicator properties

• Sort Settings - Use this option to specify any data column to sort the bars in the chart.
• X axis title and Y axis title - These titles describe the axes of the chart. If you do not want to display a title, enter a single space as the value for the title.

Dashboard properties

You can modify the fonts that are used to display the text of the chart. To do this, you need to create a dashboard object, and add the Bar Chart With Bullet sample indicator to it. Follow are the steps.

1. Save the Bar Chart With Bullet sample indicator to the BID Samples/Indicators folder.
2. Select File ► New ► Dashboard to open the Create a Dashboard dialog box.
3. For the name, enter Bar Chart With Bullet sample, and then click OK.

The Preview panel displays with an empty dashboard.

4. If the Objects panel is still hidden, unhide it so that you can see the folders.
5. From the Objects panel, expand the BID Samples/Indicators folder. Drag the Bar Chart With Bullet sample.idx file onto the empty dashboard in the Preview panel.
6. Position the Bar Chart With Bullet sample indicator on the dashboard.
