Sample 41170: Creating the range based on SASHELP.CLASS and the AGE column for use with the SAS® BI Dashboard 4.3 sample indicators

Overview

In preparation for creating the SAS BI Dashboard 4.3 sample indicators, this sample explains how to create the range that will be used with indicators based on SASHELP.CLASS and the AGE column.

Create the range

In SAS BI Dashboard, select File ► New ► Range to open the Create a Range dialog box.
For the name, enter Sample AGE range.

Click OK and the Range editor appears. In the Range editor, complete the following steps:

Click Add Interval, enter the value 12, and then click OK.
Create three more intervals for values 13, 14, and 15.
Modify the Code Interval column values, as explained next:
- For the row with Lower Value 13, change the code interval to On Target.
- For the rows with Lower Values 14 and 15, change the code interval to Above Target.
These changes will cause the color for these range intervals to change from Red to Yellow and Green. Also, a representation of a dynamic gauge is displayed with the range applied. You can change the gauge type to see how that gauge type will display in a KPI Indicator.
For the top row of the table, change the color to purple. For the bottom row of the table, change the color to blue. In some cases, these colors display when the value being represented on the gauge is in those ranges.

At this point, the Range editor should look like the following display.

Save the range

Note: If you have not created the sample folder structure, see SAS Note 41188.

Select File ► Save.
Navigate to Shared Data/BID Samples/Ranges, and save the range.

More about ranges

For the range in this sample, the Range editor displays five lines in the Intervals table, and shows the option for five different colors. This has always been a point of confusion when creating range objects. In all of the Dynamic Gauge Types, except Dynamic Traffic Lights, the smallest and largest numbers of the range are used as endpoints of the displayed gauge. When the value being displayed is outside of the largest and smallest interval values, the pointer will display at the endpoint closest to the value. There are some gauge types that indicate that the value is beyond the upper or lower bound of the range based on the color setting of the largest and smallest range interval values. The following dynamic gauge types have this capability:

Dynamic Dial - gauge styles: All - display the color in the center of the gauge
All Thermometer types - gauge styles: All - displays the specific range interval color
Dynamic Speedometer - gauge style: Modern - gauge outline will display range interval color
