Usage Note 38880: General questions and answers regarding converting customer data to a more current SAS® release

DetailsAboutRate It

This note is intended to provide general information about the SAS Technical Support policy for migrating customer data sets or catalogs to a more current SAS release. If customer hardware is still accessible and SAS is installed on it, SAS Technical Support prefers to provide a short-term setinit when the setinit is expired so customers can make the conversion themselves. A large customer migration should be handled through SAS Consulting services for a fee. SAS also has a partnership program with many consulting and technology organizations. You can find a SAS partner with the knowledge and skills that you might need by searching or browsing the A-Z index of partners.

Occasionally, as a courtesy, SAS Technical Support has converted legacy files for customers to assist them through what they might otherwise find to be a difficult and costly procedure to arrange. This is at the discretion of the individual consultant assigned to the tracking entry. Although we do our best to do this within a reasonable time frame, sometimes accessing older SAS releases on a different operating system is time consuming, so we are unable to provide customers with a specific turn-around time.

In addition, SAS Technical Support might be unable to assist with a large number of files or very large files. Customers should be made aware that unforeseen circumstances can prevail such as finding that the data is corrupt.

A ZIP file can be sent as an attachment to a tracking number, but please convey to SAS Technical Support which zipping utility was used, such as WinZip, GZIP, and so on. This is because a similar utility must be used to unzip the file or it might experience corruption. Alternatively, you can upload larger files to the anonymous FTP site using the online instructions here.

Note that moving SAS files off of one system to another using communications software such as FTP requires the use of a BINARY transfer mode. The default ASCII mode of transfer almost always corrupts a SAS file.

If you are in need of assistance to convert legacy data sets or catalogs, the SAS Technical Support consultant assigned to your tracking entry will be happy to discuss the options available to you.
