When you are installing SAS 9.2, the SAS Deployment Wizard might start the installation and then stop. No error message is generated.

This issue can occur for several reasons. Use the following list to help you troubleshoot the problem:

• Are the SAS DVDs damaged?

  Check the DVDs for scratches or smudges. Clean them with a soft cloth and try again. If the problem continues, copy the entire contents of the first DVD to a new empty folder on the local drive. If you receive errors while copying the contents of the DVD to a local folder, then obtain new DVDs. If the copy works, then start the setup.exe file in the new folder or try the installation on another machine. If the installation does not start on another machine, then obtain new DVDs.

• Was SAS previously installed on this system?

  If SAS was previously installed, when you reinstall the software, be sure to close all SAS programs. To find out which SAS programs are running, use the Windows Task Manager to determine whether any SAS processes (such as sas.exe, spawner.exe, and objspawn.exe) or services (such as SAS Lev1 MS, SAS Lev1 OB, SAS Lev1 CS, and so on) are active.

  To open Windows Task Manager

  Right-click an empty space on the taskbar, and then select Task Manager. You can also press and hold the CTRL+ALT+DELETE keys to open the Task Manager.

  To open the Services menu

  Select Start ► Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.

  
  
• Is the antivirus software running? It must be closed and deactivated. Select Control Panel ► Administrative Tools ► Services to close and deactivate your antivirus software.
  
  
• Do you have enough space on your hard drive? To check the amount of available free space:
  
  
  1. Select Start ► Run, type explorer, click OK, then select My Computer.
  2. Select and then right-click the C:\ drive, and then select Properties. The resulting Properties dialog box displays a graph that shows how much free space is available.
  3. If disk space is low, delete unnecessary files and free some disk space before you continue with the installation.
  4. To free disk space, run the Disk Cleanup tool. To start the tool, select Start ► Programs ► Accessories ► System Tools► Disk Cleanup.
  
  
• Is the Windows temporary-environment variable designated to a directory that exists?

  Change the environment variables from !USERPROFILE\local settings\temp to drive:\directory-name where drive:\directory-name is the name of a directory that exists in your file structure.

  To add or change the values of environment variables:

  1. Open System in the Control Panel.
  2. On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables, then select the name of the user variable or system variable that you want to change, as follows:
     • Click New to add a new variable name and value.
     • Click Edit to change a current variable name and value.
  
  
• Did you start your computer in safe mode before you started the installation? To start your computer in safe mode:
  
  
  1. Press the F8 key when the machine is first starting, before the Windows logo appears.
  2. Select the option for Safe Mode.
  3. Perform the SAS installation.
  
  
• Does your account have the appropriate permissions?

  This problem can occur when the account that is being used to install SAS is a member of the systems administrator group, but is not a local account on that particular computer. If this is the case, then you do not have all the necessary permissions. To learn more about this distinction, see SAS Note 5055 "Administrator of the machine versus being part of the administrator group."

  If this happens, log in with a different user ID (for example, use the administrator ID). If you continue to have problems, redirect the USERPROFILE environment variable.

  To add or change the values of environment variables:

  1. Open System in the Control Panel.
  2. On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables, then select the name of the user variable or system variable that you want to change, as follows:
     • Click New to add a new variable name and value.
     • Click Edit to change a current variable name and value.
     • Click Delete to remove a variable name and value.
  
  
• Are you installing from a SAS Software Depot or from the original CDs? Retry the installation from a different media than the one from which you first attempted the installation.

  Problems have been reported when users try to copy a SAS Software Depot from one machine to another. Instead of copying the depot, use the SAS Deployment Wizard to create a SAS Software Depot on your machine. If you have just copied the depot from one location to another instead of using the SAS Deployment Wizard to install SAS, try installing from the original SAS Software Depot.

  
  
• Are you trying to install SAS 9.2 Phase 1 on a Windows Home edition?

  SAS 9.2 is not supported under any Windows Home editions, including Windows XP Home and Vista Premium or Basic. Therefore, this behavior is normal.

• Did you run the JRE before beginning the installation? You must run the JRE first:
  
  
  1. Insert the DVD in the drive. If you are installing from a SAS Software Depot, skip to step 3.
  2. Close the autorun file when it appears.
  3. Select Start ► Run, click Browse, and run the program that is appropriate for your operating system:

     For Windows 32-bit on x86:

     products\javaruntime__9270__win__en__sp0__1\jre- 1_5_0_12-windows-i586-p.exe

     For Windows x64:

     products\javaruntime__9270__wx6__en__sp0__1\jre- 1_5_0_12-windows-i586-p.exe

     For Windows 64-bit on Itanium:

     products\javaruntime__9260__w64__en__sp0__1 \jrockit-R27.1.0-jre1.5.0_08-windows-ipf.exe

• Are you logged on to the Vista operating system as an administrator?

  Sometimes security restrictions that are enforced by User Account Control (UAC) prevent applications that require Administrative privileges from running properly, even if the user is a member of the administrators group.

  If you already have administrative privileges, you can override UAC settings:

  1. Insert the DVD in the drive. If you are installing from a SAS Software Depot, skip to step 3.
  2. Close the autorun file when it appears.
  3. Right-click setup.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  4. A User Account Control dialog box appears. Click Allow to run the application with administrator privileges.
     
     
• You might be receiving Java Heap errors in either the bootstrap.log (SAS 9.2) or the deploywiz*.log (SAS 9.3).

  For more information, see Installation Note 40012: "An error message relating to Java heap space might occur when you are installing SAS® 9.2 or SAS® 9.3."

If the preceding information was not helpful, try the following:

1. Run a thorough defragmentation program.
2. Run a thorough scandisk program.
3. Scan your entire system for viruses.
4. Run antispyware and anti-adware programs on your system.

If you continue to have problems after trying the additional suggestions listed above, please open a track with SAS Technical Support and attach the bootstrap.log file from the following location on your system:

C:\Documents and Settings\user-ID\Local Settings\Application Data\SAS\SAS Deployment Wizard

On Windows Vista:

C:\Users\user-ID\AppData\Local\SAS\SAS Deployment Wizard
