Usage Note 14067: SAS® Software Navigator starts the installation and stops executing and no error messages displayed
During installation of SAS, the SAS Software Navigator (SSN) starts the
installation and then stops. No error messages appear.
This issue can occur for several reasons. Use the following steps to
help narrow down and troubleshooting this problem:
1. Are you installing from a SAS Software Depot (SSD) or from the
original CDs? If from the SSD, try installing from CDs. If from
CDs, try installing from SSD.
* Make sure your SSD has only one Rev # in each SSD. You can
identify the Rev # on the lower left corner on the front of your
SAS Installation Kit.
2. Was SAS previously installed on this system? If it was, are there
any sas.exe processes running, object spawner, and so on? To stop
the SAS services reference the following SAS Note:
#012279
3. Is the anti-virus software running? It needs to be closed and
deactivated. You can perform this from the Control
Panel>Administrative Tools>Services.
4. Make sure you have enough hard drive space. To check the amount
of free space, perform the following:
A. Click on Start>Run and type explorer, click on My Computer and
highlight the C:\ drive, right click and select properties. In
the middle of the window look at how much free space you have.
B. If you are low on disk drive space, free up some space before
continuing the installation.
5. Run the SAS Private JRE first.
A. Insert the SAS Setup CD in the drive.
B. Close autorun when it appears.
C. Click on Start>Run, select Browse, and run the following:
d:\srw\bundles\sasjre\jresetup.exe
Does this complete?
D. If this completes, open a DOS command prompt by clicking on
Start>Run and then typing cmd.
E. At the command prompt type:
java -version
Which version is displayed? If the version is *NOT* 1.4.2_04 or
higher, reference the following SAS Note:
#012279
6. Uninstall the SAS Private JRE from the Control Panel>Add/Remove
Programs.
J2SE(tm) Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1 (SAS Private Version)
7. Rename the following files by adding .old to the end of the file:
A. C:\Documents and Settings\<user id>\ssnprefs.xml
B. C:\Documents and Settings\<user id>\SSN.log
C. C:\Documents and Settings\<user id>\SSN.log.lck
For example: ssnprefs.xml.old
8. Delete everything from the Temp directory. The default location
is:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user id>\Local Settings\Temp)
9. Delete the following registry key if it exists:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JavaSoft\Prefs\ssn91
* Make sure you backup your System Registry before deleting or
making modifications to registry.
10. See SAS Note #012858 at for an Oracle Java conflict:
#012858
11. This issue of SSN starting and stopping during installation can
also occur when the account that is being used to install SAS is
a member of the Systems Administrator group but is NOT a local
account on that particular PC. This means that the account being
used did not have all the necessary permissions. To verify that
you have the correct permissions, perform the following:
a. Highlight My Computer on the Desktop, right click and select
Manage.
b. Double Click on Disk Management.
* You will receive an error if you do not have the correct
permissions.
The following Warning might appear in the Event Viewer when this
happens:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: WinMgmt
Event Category: None
Event ID: 63
Date: 1/4/2005
Time: 12:39:58 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
