Usage Note 32904: Migrating SAS® Enterprise Miner(tm) projects to a new server on the same operating system

DetailsAboutRate It

A SAS Enterprise Miner project consists of two pieces: the physical project folder, and metadata about that project. The project folder is stored on the SAS workspace server's file system. The metadata about the project is stored in the foundation repository on SAS® Metadata Server.

The steps that you follow to move a project from one location to another depend on these factors:

  1. the operating system on which the project folder is stored
  2. the operating system to which you want to move the project
  3. the SAS Metadata Repository remaining the same, or not

This note describes the steps for moving a project to a new workspace server that has the same operating system as the originating operating system. These steps work also if you simply want to move the project to a new location on the same server. If you are moving your project to a server that is running a different operating system (such as from Windows 32 bit to Windows 64 bit), then see this note: SAS Note 32905, "Migrating SAS® Enterprise Miner™ 5.x projects to a new server on a different operating system".

For additional information, see the section "Defining Migrated Projects in SAS Enterprise Miner" in this document: SAS® Enterprise Miner™ 12.1: Administration and Configuration

  1. Using your file-system commands, or drag-and-drop, copy the project folder from the current location to the new location.
  2. Open SAS Enterprise Miner and delete the project:
    1. select Open Project
    2. select the project from the listing within the Open Project window
    3. click delete
    4. close the Open Project window

The project folder and the metadata for that project are deleted.
  3. Open SAS Enterprise Miner and create a new project using the same name and specifying the new location:
    1. select New Project
    2. name the project using the exact same name as before. NOTE: this name is case-sensitive if you are on a case-sensitive file system (such as UNIX)
    3. specify the path as the location to which you copied the project folder in step 1
    4. click Ok

SAS Enterprise Miner recognizes that the physical project folder and data already exists, and just registers the project in the Metadata Repository.

This step should be performed if the project is going to move to a new server or to a new location within the file system of the current server.

Note: These steps work as long as the new server and the old server are in the same operating system family (ie. AIX to AIX, or Windows 32-bit to Windows 32-bit).

Note that the data sets that the data sources are based on are typically not stored in the project folder. You need to copy the underlying data sets to your new machine as well.

  4. Once the project is opened, edit the Project Start Code. Correct the paths that are specified in the LIBNAME statement to reflect the path of the data sets on the new machine. Select Run Now to rerun the code.

Note: Make sure not to change the libref in the LIBNAME statement because the datasources are dependent on the existing libref.

Note: If you have any SAS Code nodes that contain explicit references to files, then you need to update the paths in those nodes too.
