Usage Note 20093: Sorting rules for SAS® Web Report Studio

DetailsAboutRate It

Overview

SAS Web Report Studio sorts category data items based on data type and the object in which the values are displayed. The following table indicates how the values are sorted by default.

Data Type List Table Crosstabulation Table Graph*
Character (values can be character, numeric, or alphanumeric)** Formatted Formatted Formatted
Numeric (values are all numeric) Formatted*** Unformatted Unformatted
Dates, times, and timestamps Formatted Unformatted Unformatted
*  Bar-line charts sort by formatted values for all data types. For more information see, SAS Note 39904.
** When sorting character values, capital letters take precedence over lowercase letters.
***To sort on unformatted values, apply an explicit sort to the column.

Numeric sorting example

In the following example, a user-defined format has been applied to the Age data item, which has a numeric data type. The format replaces each numeric value with a string. For example, 11 is formatted as "eleven".

  • In the list table, the values for Age are initially sorted by the formatted values. To sort by the unformatted (numeric) values, you must explicitly sort the column.

  • In the bar chart and the crosstabulation table, the values for Age are always sorted by the unformatted values.
