The number of IO threads depends on several factors, for example, the size of the data, total number of cores, and the batch window. (This is usually determined during the hardware sizing process.)

The middle tier runs within a JBoss Web application server. JBoss Application Server 4.2.3 GA is supported. If you use JBoss Application Server 4.2.3. GA, no additional configuration is required.
However, if you use one of the other supported versions (in particular, if you run with the Enterprise Application Platform version of JBoss), you might need to perform additional configuration steps.

Note: JDK is used to run the middle tier. However, JRE is used to run the client, the grid server (for SAS Revenue Optimization), and other java-based applications. The correct versions of JRE and JDK are included with your installation.
