Navigating Data in the Table Viewer

Overview of Table Navigation

Most data sources contain too much data to be displayed in the table viewer at one time. Navigation features enable you to view data that is not shown in the initial display, or to focus on a subset of the data.
Using navigation features in the table viewer you can perform the following tasks:
Note: You can also navigate the data by searching for data values. See Search for Data Values (OLAP Data Only).

Scroll through Rows and Columns

If a subset of the columns or rows in the table viewer can fit on the screen at one time, the lower-left or upper-right corner of the table will contain a navigation bar like this:
navigation bar
The navigation bar contains the following information:
  • the rows and columns that you are currently viewing
  • the total number of rows or columns
The following buttons are available for navigating columns:
left navigation button
scroll to the previous group of columns
leftmost navigation button
jump to the first column
right navigation button
scroll to the next group of columns
rightmost navigation button
jump to the last column
The following buttons are available for navigating rows:
up navigation button
scroll to the previous group of rows
topmost navigation button
jump to the first row
down navigation button
scroll to the next group of rows
bottommost navigation button
jump to the last row
Note: You can change the number of rows and columns that are displayed in the table viewer at one time. See Specify Properties for the Table Viewer and Color-Mapped Table Viewer.

Resize Headings

To resize the headings in the table, click the edge of a heading and drag it to the width that you want.
You can resize the innermost headings on the horizontal axis. You can also resize the hierarchy level and measure headings on the vertical axis.

Expand and Collapse Hierarchy Members (OLAP Data Only)

In the initial display for OLAP data in the table viewer, only the top-level members are shown for each hierarchy. To see the lower-level members within a hierarchy, you must expand the top-level members.
To expand a single member, click expand button. To collapse the member again, click collapse button.
To expand all members at a specific level, click on a level heading and select Expand All from the pop-up menu. To collapse the members again, click on the level heading and select Collapse All from the pop-up menu.
Note: If your information map contains a very large amount of data, the Expand All and Collapse All actions might take several minutes, and can use significant system resources.

Drill Down on Hierarchy Members (OLAP Data Only)

You can focus your view on a specific hierarchy member by drilling down on that member. Click drilldown button for the member that you want to drill down on.
When you drill down on a member, that member becomes the top-level heading for the hierarchy that it is a member of. The drill-down context appears in the Drill Path viewer.
For example, if you drill down on the member 2001 of the dimension TIME, the context TIME > 2001 appears.
To drill back up, click on the member that you want to drill to in the Drill Path viewer. In the preceding example, you would click on the top-level member, TIME. You can also drill up in a hierarchy by clicking a level heading within the hierarchy and selecting Up to level-name.
Using the drilling controls in the table viewer, you can drill down multiple times within the same hierarchy. You can also drill down in multiple hierarchies. For example, if a table contains the TIME and GEOGRAPHY dimensions, you might focus on data for the first quarter of 2003, and for the Northeast region, by drilling down to TIME > 2003 > 1 and GEOGRAPHY > NORTHEAST.
You can minimize (minimize icon), restore (restore icon), or remove (remove icon) the Drill Path viewer by using the appropriate buttons.
Note: If you remove the Drill Path viewer, you can add it by selecting Viewthen selectDrill Path on the main menu bar.

Isolate a Hierarchy Member (OLAP Data Only)

You can focus on the data for a specific hierarchy member by isolating that member. Right-click the member that you want to isolate, and then select Isolate member-name.
When you isolate a hierarchy member, that member is the only member that is displayed from that hierarchy. A filter is automatically created to select the isolated member, and a drill-down action is also created if the isolated member is not the top-level member.
For example, if you isolate the member 2007 in the TIME dimension, then the filter Time: 2007 is created.
To undo the isolation, open the Filters dialog box and clear the filters for the dimension that contains the isolated member.

Show Detailed Data (OLAP Data Only)

For some OLAP cubes, you can view the underlying data table by using the Detail Data dialog box.
You can open the Detail Data dialog box by using either of the following methods:
  • Click on any cell value.
  • Right-click on any measure or hierarchy member and select Show Detail Data.
For more information, seeViewing Detailed Data (OLAP Data Only).
