COVID-19 by the Numbers

Return to the SAS Accessibility Gallery or the SAS Disability Support Center.

This page contains sample accessible data visualizations about coronavirus (COVID-19) that support alternative presentations such as enhanced visual rendering, text descriptions, tabular data, and interactive sonification. Sonification uses non-speech audio to convey information such as spatial location.

All content and analysis presented in these samples are provided strictly for educational, informational, and demonstration purposes only. Tips for Accessing Maps

SAS Graphics Accelerator enables users with blindness to perceive spatial information within maps using audio output in conjunction with a standard computer keyboard or a gamepad. A gamepad is a video game controller. It enables blind users to "feel" the spatial position of objects within a map by moving a physical thumbstick throughout 360 degrees of motion while hearing instant audio feedback. For best results, we recommend using Microsoft Windows 10 with a Microsoft Xbox controller.

To explore a map:

  1. Connect your Xbox controller to your Windows 10 computer.
  2. Open Google Chrome.
  3. Install SAS Graphics Accelerator for Google Chrome from the Chrome Web Store.
  4. Open a map and activate the Accelerate button.
  5. Use the Page Up and Page Down keys on your keyboard or the right thumbstick on your Xbox controller to feel objects in any direction around your current virtual location within the map.
  6. Press H on your keyboard for additional commands that allow you to zoom in/out, change your virtual location, control speech output, and more.
  7. Use the self-guided maps tutorial to learn more.

Tips for Accessing Charts and Graphs

SAS Graphics Accelerator enables users with blindness to perceive many types of charts and graphs using ear buds and a standard computer keyboard. Each data element in a chart or graph is represented by a sound. The pitch of the sound indicates position on the Y axis. Position on the X axis is communicated using the stereo effect between the left and right speakers or ear buds.

To explore a chart or graph:

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Install SAS Graphics Accelerator for Google Chrome from the Chrome Web Store.
  3. Open a chart or graph and activate the Accelerate button.
  4. Press V until you hear "Explore Mode", then press an arrow key to explore point by point.
  5. Press V until you hear "Scan Mode", then press an arrow key to play the entire chart or graph.
  6. Press D to change speed.
  7. If the chart or graph contains grouped data, press G to change groups.
  8. Press S to play multiple groups as a chord or melody.
  9. Press H for additional commands.
