Setup Prerequisites for SAS Data Surveyor for SAP

To use SAS Data Surveyor for SAP, the appropriate users, servers, and libraries must be set up. A system administrator typically sets up most of the prerequisites using SAS Management Console. The users, servers, and libraries that must be set up before you can use SAS Data Surveyor for SAP include the following:
SAS Metadata Server
provides access to metadata repositories that store server, library, and user definitions as well as other metadata.
SAP users
identify the login profiles that are able to connect to your SAP systems using login parameters that are required to access the SAP data and metadata.
SAS Application Server
enables you to connect to a SAS session.
SAP server
enables you to connect to your SAP BW System or SAP R/3 System.
SAP library
identifies the SAP system library that provides the SAS engine that is needed to access the data in your SAP R/3 System or SAP BW System.
Note: You must define an SAP system library regardless of whether you are connecting to an SAP R/3 System or an SAP BW System.
SAP metadata library
identifies the Base SAS library in which the extracted SAP BW or SAP R/3 metadata is saved.
BW Star library
identifies the Base SAS library in which the data from a selected SAP BW InfoCube or ODS object is saved.
Note: This library is required only when you use the SAP BW Register Tables wizard.
The appropriate user profiles and user permissions must be defined in SAS Management Console before you can use most of servers and libraries. The user profiles that are defined in SAS Management Console correspond to login profiles that are defined for your SAP System and provide the appropriate rights to access the SAP systems and the SAP data. For more information about setting up users and assigning permissions, see the User Manager Help in SAS Management Console.
The servers and libraries are required to connect to the necessary machines and access your SAP data.
The following table describes the interdependencies between the servers and library definitions.

Additional Information
SAS Metadata Server
SAS Metadata Server is a multiuser server that surfaces metadata from one or more repositories to SAS Open Metadata Interface client applications by means of the SAS Open Metadata Architecture. The SAS Open Metadata Architecture is a general-purpose metadata management facility that provides common metadata services for applications.
SAS Intelligence Platform
For more information about the purpose of the SAS Metadata Server, see SAS Intelligence Platform: Overview.
SAS RFC Server
SAS RFC server is needed in z/OS operating environments only. It is a component of SAS/ACCESS Interface to R/3 that provides access to the data in SAP Systems. The SAS RFC Server also supports calling advanced business applications programming (ABAP) RFC functions. The SAS RFC Server uses the TCP/IP protocol for communication with your SAP System.
SAS/ACCESS Interface to R/3
SAS RFC Server is a component of SAS/ACCESS Interface to R/3. For more information about the SAS RFC Server, see About the SAS RFC Server.
SAP users
The SAP users identify the users who have the appropriate privileges to log in to the SAP System and access the SAP data and metadata.
SAS Metadata Server
The SAS user profiles are stored on the SAS Metadata Server. For more information about defining users, see the User Manager Help in SAS Management Console.
SAS application server
Enables you to connect to a SAS session that is running on a host machine.
SAS Intelligence Platform
The SAS application server identifies the local or remote installation of SAS by providing a connection to the host machine.
SAP server
The SAP server identifies the version of SAP software that you are using.
SAS application server
The SAS application server uses SAS/ACCESS Interface to R/3 to communicate with the SAP System and access your SAP data.
SAP System library
The SAP System library identifies the SAS engine that is used to connect to and read data and metadata from your SAP System.
SAS application server and SAP server
The SAS application server uses the SAP server to access and read your SAP data. When you extract SAP metadata, the SAP server and SAS use the SAP system library to establish a connection to your SAP System.
SAP metadata library
The SAP metadata library is a Base SAS library that contains SAP metadata extracted from your SAP System. The library also identifies the location in which to store the SAP metadata.
SAS application server, SAP server, and SAP system library
The SAS application server uses the SAP server and SAP System library to access and read your SAP data. When you extract metadata, the SAS application server extracts SAP metadata and stores the metadata as SAS data sets in the SAP metadata library.
BW Star library
The BW Star library is a Base SAS library. This library identifies the location to store the data that you load from your SAP BW System. When the data is loaded, it is converted from the SAP BW snowflake schema to a star schema.
SAS application server, SAP server, and SAP System library
The SAS application server uses the SAP server and SAP System library to access and read your SAP data. When you specify the source SAP data that you want to use, the SAS application server creates a job that loads the data from the SAP BW InfoCube or ODS object into the BW Star library.
