About the SAS RFC Server

The SAS Remote Function Call (RFC) Server is a component of the SAS Data Surveyor for SAP in z/OS operating environments. It provides access to the data in SAP R/3 and SAP BW Systems. The SAS RFC Server also supports calling ABAP RFC functions. The SAS RFC Server uses the TCP/IP protocol for communication with the SAP System.
The SAS RFC Server has the following features:
  • It runs independently of SAS as a background process on the SAS host, the SAP host, or another machine entirely.
  • It can be configured to listen on any TCP/IP port (default 6999).
  • It can have more than one concurrent instance on a given machine, but each instance must have a unique port number. Each instance can communicate with numerous SAP R/3 or SAP BW Systems.
  • It can process requests from multiple SAP application servers.
  • It can support Unicode and non-Unicode SAP servers. The Unicode SAS RFC Server can be started from Windows only, but it can support Unicode SAP R/3 and SAS on all platforms. For information on starting a Unicode RFC server, see SAS RFC Server on Windows.
