High-Level Steps for Designing Graphs

The ODS Graphics Designer provides many options for designing graphs, and your approach can vary from what is described here. In general though, a typical design process might consist of the following steps:
  1. Create a new graph. You can either create a blank graph or choose from the Graph Gallery.
  2. Add a plot to the graph by dragging a plot icon from the Elements pane to the graph.
If you choose a graph layout from the Graph Gallery, then your graph already has one or more plots. You can add more plots or inset elements to the graph.
You cannot add plots to matrix graphs that you create from the Matrix tab of the Graph Gallery.
  3. Assign data to the plot. You are prompted to assign data when you create a graph or when you add a plot to a graph.
For graphs that are created from the Graph Gallery, placeholder data is assigned to the various plot roles. You can change these assignments as appropriate for your graph.
If you want the graph to be a classification panel, then you can select the classification variable(s). For more information, see Creating a Classification Panel.
  4. You can add cells (rows and columns) to the graph, and then add one or more plots to the cells.
  5. Customize the graph. Here are some of the changes that you can make:
    • Change the graph’s style, size, or background color.
    • Change the visual attributes of the plot, such as marker color, symbol, line color, and thickness.
    • Change axis properties, including grid lines.
    • Add titles and footnotes to the graph.
    • Add or customize legends, which can reside inside or outside of a cell.
    • Add headers or text to a cell.
  6. Save the graph.
