Problem Note 65032: Large SAS® Visual Analytics reports can experience navigation delays and exhaust browser memory
When viewing a report in SAS Visual Analytics, processes are executed in the background to preload additional pages in the report and to periodically save actions that you have taken in the report. For reports that have many pages, and many objects and containers on individual pages, you might see the following problems:
- Significant delays when navigating between pages in the report.
- Significant delays when clicking values within report objects in order to execute actions.
- The browser runs out of memory and becomes unresponsive. For example, in Chrome you might see an “Aw, Snap” message.
Click the Hot Fix tab in this note for a link to instructions about accessing and applying the software update.
In addition to improvements made to the creation of the report state, this hot fix adds a related configuration property to control how many pages are preloaded behind the scenes. The default is 6, which means that when you view the first page of the report, SAS Visual Analytics attempts to preload the layout for the next six pages. For large reports, you might need to adjust this property to a smaller value. If you are encountering navigation delays, follow these steps to adjust this property:
- Log on to SAS® Environment Manager as an administrator.
- Navigate to Configuration ► All Services ► SAS Visual Analytics Service.
- Edit the sas.visualanalytics configuration instance.
- Scroll to the bottom, and add the following supplementalProperty:
Name: backgroundPageRendering
Value: 6
In addition, you can choose to disable the creation of report states by following the instructions in SAS Note 64113.
For best practices on creating SAS Visual Analytics reports, see the Beautiful Reports guide.

For software releases that are not yet generally available, the Fixed
Release is the software release in which the problem is planned to be
fixed.
Both periodically saving the view state for SAS Visual Analytics reports and preloading background pages of a report can cause significant navigation delays and exhaust browser memory. As a workaround for saving the view state, you can disable the feature that saves the view state.
