Problem Note 50673: Searching in SAS® Web Report Studio from the SAS Folders root folder might cause the SAS® Metadata Server to become unresponsive
Sites with a large number of folders (tree objects) in the SAS® Metadata Repositories might experience what appears to be an unresponsive SAS Metadata Server when all of the following events occur:
-
In SAS Web Report Studio, you perform a search in the Open dialog box (accessed by selecting File ► Open) with the following specifications:
- You specify all objects.
- You select SAS Folders (the root folder) as the location from which to start the search.
- You select the Include Sub-Folders option.
- You have a large repository with more than 1,000 subfolders.
- An update is requested while the search is being processed. Note: For releases earlier than SAS® 9.4, any authentication by a SAS internal-account user ID (for example,
sastrust@saspw) triggers an update.
Note: This problem is more likely to occur if you are a member of the Metadata Server: Unrestricted role.
The total processing time for such a query increases exponentially when you have more than 1000 subfolders. When a query is processed, the metadata update request requires a lock on the SAS Metadata Repository. Therefore, all other user requests must wait until the long query finishes processing.
When a metadata request runs for minutes, it creates a window in which an update can arrive and create a bottleneck. The longer such a request runs, the larger that window and the bottleneck become. However, all processes eventually complete in an orderly fashion, thereby resolving the bottleneck.
You can shorten the processing time by specifying a folder that contains less than 1,000 subfolders.
Note: This problem is fixed in SAS® 9.4.

For software releases that are not yet generally available, the Fixed
Release is the software release in which the problem is planned to be
fixed.
Searching for all objects in all folders results in an inefficient query. The total processing time for such a search is geometrically proportional to the size of the foundation repository. Therefore, the request might effect other users' response time.
