Installation Note 41327: The SAS® menu does not appear after a SAS® Add-In for Microsoft Office installation
Following an apparently successful installation of the SAS® Add-In 4.3 for Microsoft Office, the SAS® menu does not appear in Microsoft Office products. Or, the SAS Add-In 4.3 for Microsoft Office was working successfully, and then the SAS menu no longer appears in the Microsoft application, such as Excel.
This problem occurs if Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) was not installed as part of the system requirements. Or, installing Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) 10 might cause this problem. To solve this problem, first verify that VSTO was not installed, and then install it, as described in this SAS Note. If the problem persists and VSTO 10 is also installed, then reinstall the VSTO 10 components using the instructions in SAS Note 50561: "Installing Microsoft Lync 2013 might impair the load behavior of SAS® Add-In 4.3 for Microsoft Office."
Verify That the VSTO Components Were Not Installed
If the VSTO components were not installed, a run-time error is displayed on the COM Add-Ins dialog box. Note that this problem can exist even if the run-time error is not displayed in the COM Add-Ins dialog box.
Inspect the COM Add-Ins dialog box to see whether a run-time error occurred; perform the following steps for the Microsoft Office version that you are using.
Note: The examples provided in the following steps are based on Microsoft Excel, but the same problem can occur with Microsoft PowerPoint or Word. Therefore, the Location path that is shown in the COM Add-Ins dialog box differs depending on the Microsoft Office product that you are using.
Microsoft Office 2010
- Open Excel and select File ► Options.
- Click Add-Ins in the left navigation bar.
- From the Manage drop-down list at the bottom, select COM Add-ins, and then click Go. The COM Add-Ins dialog box appears.
- Look at the information for Load Behavior in the COM Add-Ins dialog box. If the VSTO components were not installed, this message appears:
Load Behavior: Not loaded. A runtime error occurred during the loading of the COM Add-in.
- Close the dialog box and install the VSTO components as instructed in the section "Install the VSTO Components."
Microsoft Office 2007
- Open Excel and click the Office button.
- Select Excel Options and then click Add-Ins on the left navigation bar.
- From the Manage drop-down list at the bottom, select COM Add-Ins, and then click Go. The COM Add-Ins dialog box appears.

Load Behavior: Not loaded. A runtime error occurred during the loading of the COM Add-in.
- Close the dialog box and install the VSTO components as instructed in the section "Installing the VSTO Components."
Microsoft Office 2003
- Open Excel and select Tools ► Customize. The Customize dialog box appears.
- Click the Commands tab.
- Under Categories, select Tools.
- Under Commands, locate and drag COM Add-Ins to the menu bar at the top of the window.
- Close the Customize dialog box.
- Select COM Add-Ins. The COM Add-ins dialog box appears.
- Look at the Load Behavior field of the COM Add-Ins dialog box. If the VSTO components were not installed, the following message appears:
Load Behavior: Not loaded. A runtime error occurred during the loading of the COM Add-In.
- Close the dialog box and install the VSTO components as instructed in the section "Installing the VSTO Components."
Install the VSTO Components
- Navigate to the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VSTO folder.
- Look for an 8.0 folder and a 9.0 folder, as depicted here:
If the 8.0 and 9.0 folders are not present, create them as follows:
For SAS 9.2, SAS 9.2 Depot location:
- Navigate in the SAS Software Depot to products\sysreqwizard__92350__prt__xx__sp0__1\redist\vsto.
- From the 8.0 folder, run vstor8.exe. When the Maintenance Mode dialog box appears, click Repair. Click Next. Click Finish.
- From the 9.0 folder, run vstor30.exe. When the Maintenance Mode dialog box appears, click Repair. Click Next. Click Finish. Then run vstor30sp1-KB949258-x86.exe.
For SAS 9.3, SAS 9.3 Depot location:
- Navigate in the SAS Software Depot to products\vsto8__93112__prt__xx__sp0__1\w32.
- From the native folder, run vstor8.exe. When the Maintenance Mode dialog box appears, click Repair. Click Next. Click Finish.
- From the products\vsto9__93112__prt__xx__sp0__1\w32\native folder, run vstor30.exe. When the Maintenance Mode dialog box appears, click Repair. Click Next. Click Finish. Then run vstor30sp1-KB949258-x86.exe.
Running these installers creates 8.0 and 9.0 folders at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VSTO (as depicted at the beginning of this step).
- Navigate back to the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VSTO folder to see that the 8.0 and 9.0 folders are present.
See whether the problem has been solved:
- Open the relevant Microsoft Office program to see whether the SAS menu appears.
- If the SAS menu still does not appear, perform the steps from the “Verify That the VSTO Components Were Not Installed” section again, but this time select the check box for SAS Add-In 4.3 for Microsoft Office and click OK.
- If the problem persists, then determine whether VSTO components 10 is installed on your machine and reinstall VSTO components 10. Follow the instructions in SAS Note 50561.
