Problem Note 50561: The SAS® menu might be missing in Microsoft applications
When using SAS® Add-In for Microsoft Office, you might notice that the SAS menu is missing from Microsoft applications such as Excel. The issue occurs even though a previously installed SAS Add-In 4.3 for Microsoft Office or SAS Add-In 5.1 for Microsoft Office was working correctly.
The Problem Occurs under Various Conditions
- The problem occurs when SAS Add-In 4.3 for Microsoft Office is installed with the Microsoft Office 2010 32-bit edition and Microsoft Lync 2013 is subsequently installed.
- The problem might also occur when other applications install Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) 10. This problem can occur with Microsoft Office 2007 and with SAS Add-In 5.1 for Microsoft Office as well.
- In a commonly reported scenario, SAS Add-In 4.3 for Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office 2010 are functioning properly. Then, Microsoft Lync 2013 or other application is installed, but the 2010 version of the other Microsoft Office products is retained. After the installation of Microsoft Lync 2013 or other application, the load behavior changes.
Under normal circumstances, if you select SAS Add-In 4.3 for Microsoft Office in the Excel 2010 COM Add-Ins window, the Load Behavior message is Load at Startup, or something similar. After Microsoft Lync 2013 or other application has been installed, the Load Behavior message might be this:
Not loaded. A runtime error occurred during the loading of the COM Add-In.
In other reported cases, with SAS Add-In 5.1 for Microsoft Office, re-installing VSTO 10 corrected the issue. In those cases, the following error was reported:
Load Behavior: Not loaded. The Managed Add-in Loader failed to initialize.
Something related to the Microsoft VSTO 10 component of Microsoft Lync 2013 or other application is causing the problem. This is unexpected because SAS Add-In 4.3 for Microsoft Office does not rely on VSTO 10. SAS Add-In 4.3 for Microsoft Office uses VSTO 8 and VSTO 9, not VSTO 10.
Correcting the Issue
To correct the issue, reinstall the VSTO 10 component, either from the SAS Software Depot or DVDs or from the Microsoft website.
Reinstall the VSTO 10 Component from the SAS Software Depot
- In recent SAS 9.3 SAS Software Depots or DVDs, the VSTO10 folder is included. Check for the file and folder here:
- \SAS Software Depot\products\vsto10_93132_prt_xx_sp0_1\w32\native\vstor40_x86.exe
- \SAS Software Depot\products\vsto10_93132_prt_xx_sp0_1\wx6\native\vstor40_x64.exe
Note: The number 93132 is dependent on a specific revision. Your folder name might have different numbers.
- Depending on the bit architecture of your operating system, do one of the following:
-
For 32-bit operating systems, right-click vstor40_x86.exe and select Run As Administrator to install.
- For 64-bit operating systems, right-click vstor40_x64.exe and select Run As Administrator to install.
- Confirm that this folder has been created: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VSTO\10
Reinstall the VSTO 10 Component from the Microsoft Website
This method, which is based on reports from customers, corrects the issue with SAS Add-In 4.3 for Microsoft Office.
Download and install vstor_redist.exe:
- Bring up the
Microsoft Download Center page.
- Click the link for
Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime Release Date: 7/20/2015.
- Click the large Download button.
- When prompted, click Save to save the vstor_redist.exe file.
- Right-click the vstor_redist.exe file and select Run as Administrator to start the installation.
- Confirm that this folder has been created: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VSTO\10

A working SAS® Add-In 4.3 for Microsoft Office or SAS® Add-In 5.1 for Microsoft Office installation with Office 2010 or Office 2007 might malfunction after you install Lync 2013. This can also happen when installing other applications that install Microsoft Visual Studio Tools (VSTO) 10.
