Usage Note 35136: The SAS®9 installation might produce an invalid SAS® installation data file (SID file) error, and the default SID file is C:\SAS Installation Data
During the SAS® 9.2, SAS® 9.3, or SAS® 9.4 installation, the Specify SAS Installation Data File screen might default to C:\SAS Installation Data. In addition, no SAS installation data file (SID file) name is specified.
This problem occurs if the original SID file is expired and no new SID file is found in the SAS Software Depot\sid_files folder for the correct SAS site number. The error also occurs if the sid_files folder is missing from the depot. This occurs even if the C:\SAS Installation Data folder does not exist.
If you click Next on this screen, you receive this warning message:
Warning: The SAS installation data file is invalid.
Workaround
In the Specify SAS Installation Data File window, click Browse and specify the correct renewal SID file. SID files follow this naming format:
SAS9x_<order-number>_<site-number>_<host-platform>.txt
In the above, the value for SAS9x is SAS92, SAS93, or SAS94, to correspond with the applicable SAS version.
In most cases, the correct renewal SID file has the same name as the original SID file, but the order number is different.
Determining the Original SAS Site Number
To determine the order number and SAS site number for the SAS Software Depot that you are installing from, do the following:
- Obtain the six-digit order number from the Select SAS Software Order installation window, or locate the order number from the SAS Software Depot\order_data folder.
- Open the SID file from the SAS Software Depot\SID_Files folder, where the SID filename contains the same six-digit order number.
- Search for the string SITE= to obtain the SAS 9.2, 9.3, or 9.4 site number for the SAS depot or SAS media.
If the Problem Persists
Additional reasons for this error are in SAS Note 56371: "The Renew SAS® Software utility or SAS® installation process produces an 'invalid SID file' error after you select the SID file."
Renewal SID Files
When a renewal SID file is emailed to the SAS Site Representative, place the SID file for the corresponding SAS site number in the SAS Software Depot\SID_Files folder. Or, provide the new SID file to users on separate media, if SAS is already on DVDs.
