When you attempt to use the Renew SAS Software tool to update a SAS 9.2 license in a Windows operating environment, you might receive the following error message:

Error: Insufficient authorization to access C:\Program 
Files\SAS\SASFoundation\9.2\setinit.log

This is almost always due to permission issues. To work around the error, try one of the following:

1. Select Run as Administrator when you run the Renew SAS Software tool, on the Vista operating system.
   
   
   1. Select All Programs ► SAS ► SAS 9.2 License Renewal & Utilities.
   2. Right-click Renew SAS Software.
   3. Select Run As Administrator.
   4. In the User Access Control dialog box, click Allow.
   5. Continue by navigating through the SAS renewal dialog boxes. See SAS Note 31290 "Renewing your license on a SAS^® 9.2 personal installation on Windows Vista with the Renew SAS Software tool" for more information.

   As an alternative to steps a through e above, you can also do the following:

   1. Right-click the Start button and select Explore.
   2. When Windows Explorer opens, navigate to the C:\Program Files\SAS\SASFoundation\9.2\core\sasinst\sasrenew\ directory.
   3. Select sasrenew.exe. Then right-click and select Run as Administrator.
   4. Continue by navigating through the SAS renewal dialog boxes.
      
      
2. Make sure you have permissions to update the following files:
   
   
   • C:\Program Files\SAS\SASFoundation\9.2\core\sasinst\setinit.sss
   • C:\Program Files\SAS\SASFoundation\9.2\core\sasinst\sid.txt
   • C:\Program Files\SAS\SASFoundation\9.2\core\sashelp\core.sas7bcat
   • C:\Program Files\SAS\SASFoundation\9.2\setinit.log

   To check the permissions, perform the following:

   1. Right-click the Start button and select Explore.
   2. Navigate to one of the files listed above, right-click it, and select Properties.
   3. Make sure Read-Only is not selected; if it is, deselect it and click Apply.
   4. Click the Security tab and make sure that you have full control of each file.
