Usage Note 32416: A blank Enhanced Editor window remains open if SAS® programs are opened from Windows Explorer in SAS® 9.2
Starting with SAS 9.2, if you open a .sas file from Microsoft Windows Explorer, the .sas file opens in a new Enhanced Editor window. However, the default Enhanced Editor-Untitled1 window, which is empty, also remains open.
This is the new default behavior in SAS 9.2 to prevent the SAS program code from appending to any existing
SAS code in the Enhanced Editor-Untitled1 window. In SAS®9 releases before SAS 9.2, if SAS is open and you switch to Windows Explorer and
select Open with SAS 9, the SAS program might append to any existing code that is in the active Enhanced Editor window.
SAS Note 14161, "SAS® programs opened from Windows Explorer are appended to existing SAS code if SAS code is in the Enhanced Editor window," documents the SAS®9 behavior.
To avoid this issue, beginning with SAS 9.2, the SAS program opens in a new Enhanced Editor window.
You can close the empty Enhanced Editor window or use it to open another SAS program. To open another SAS program, click the empty Enhanced Editor window and then select
File ► Open Program to locate your existing .sas file.
This new default behavior prevents the SAS program code from accidentally appending to any existing code.
To ensure that an empty Enhanced Editor window does not generate, open SAS first, and then select
File ► Open Program to locate your existing .sas file.
In SAS 9.3, a change is planned to prevent an empty Enhanced Editor window from being generated when SAS programs are opened from Windows Explorer.

For software releases that are not yet generally available, the Fixed
Release is the software release in which the problem is planned to be
fixed.
In SAS®9, if SAS is open and you switch to Microsoft Windows Explorer and choose Open with SAS 9, the SAS program appends to any existing code in the current Enhanced Editor window. To avoid this problem in SAS 9.2, the SAS program now opens in a new Enhanced Editor window.
