Problem Note 31647: Memory usage in the SAS® Metadata Server for SAS® IT Resource Management 3.1 and beyond is excessive
The default memory allocation environment variables for the SAS Metadata Server
running in the z/OS environment are not optimal when the server is used for SAS IT Resource Management 3.1 and 3.1.1 releases.
The symptoms are excessive memory allocation for the SAS Metadata Server
or running out of memory. If you are experiencing these symptoms, or have a new
SAS IT Resource Management 3.1.1 installation, perform ONE of the following actions:
- Install the special consideration zap that is available through SAS Technical Support.
The zap reduces memory significantly without
degrading performance. For additional information about the special consideration zap, refer to
SAS Note 31661.
- Disable the use of large cell pools when the SAS Metadata Server is running under z/OS and is
used primarily for SAS IT Resource Management. Do NOT do this if you applied the zap from SAS Note 31661.
The &prefix.W0.SRVENV data set contains environment variables for SAS servers, where
&prefix is the file system prefix chosen at your site for installing the SAS System.
In the &prefix.W0.SRVENV data set, look for the member that contains the environment variables for the
SAS Metadata Server. This is usually a member whose fourth through sixth characters are "OMR".
This name would be the same as the name of the started task for the SAS Metadata Server.
Within that member, remove any line that contains the set TKOPT_CPOOL3=
specification and save your changes.
This modification disables the use of large cell pools and thereby reduces the memory consumption
of the SAS Metadata Server for the usage pattern typical to SAS IT Resource Management.
Disabling this option can result in higher CPU consumption and slower performance of the SAS Metadata Server.
Refer to the following SAS Notes to find more information about improving the performance of SAS IT Resource Management
in your BI environment under z/OS:
SAS Note 31641 provides information about TK memory options
that are used to tune various SAS servers under z/OS.
SAS Note 20458 provides access to a SAS IT Resource Management 3.1.1 hot fix that improves performance.
SAS Note 20872 provides access to a SAS IT Resource Management 3.1.1 hot fix that improves performance.
SAS Note 31695 provides access to a SAS IT Resource Management 3.1.1 hot fix
that can greatly reduce the amount of metadata defined to the SAS Metadata Server.
