Overview

By default, the PROC SQL code generated for SAS Web Report Studio inserts the STRIP function to remove leading and trailing blanks on character fields on a filter expression. This default behavior can affect performance when the underlying database is not SAS, and it can have an impact on filter results. Specifically, if the filter depends on the blanks being preserved, then the STRIP function might return incorrect results. For the previous two reasons, removing the STRIP function might be the best choice.

On the other hand, if your filter only works with blanks removed, then you should leave the STRIP function set to the default.

To disable the STRIP function, perform the following steps, depending on which version of SAS Web Report Studio you are running:

Versions 4.x

1. Log in to SAS Management Console with user who has access to the Configuration Manager plug-in.
2. On the Plug-ins tab, navigate to Application Management ► Configuration Manager.
3. Right-click on Web Report Studio 4.x and select Properties.
4. Click the Advanced tab.
5. Click Add.
6. In the Property Name box, enter webreportstudio.strip.based.filtering.strategy
7. In the Property Value box, enter the value you want to use. The valid options for this property are:
• 0 = data item will not be wrapped with the STRIP or TRIM function
• 1 = data item will be wrapped with the TRIM function
• 2 = (default) data item will be wrapped with the STRIP function
8. Click OK twice to exit all of the dialog boxes.
9. Restart your Web application server.

Note: Removing the STRIP function might cause some filter information to display incorrectly. Specifically, in the Applied Filters text, a filter defined for a table or graph might appear as DataItemFormattingExpression(<<TABLE_DATA_11162011145934663.DIR_2>>, 'unformatted', 'charNotFormattedWhenNoFormat') equal to CANADA, GERMANY, U.S.A. instead of as (Country equal to CANADA, GERMANY, U.S.A.)

Version 3.1

Note: The change is made in the LocalProperties.xml file. If you do not have a LocalProperties.xml file, see SAS Note 32858.

1. Open the LocalProperties.xml file in a plain-text editor (see SAS Note 32858 for typical locations).
2. Just before the closing </properties> tag, enter the following lines:

<webreportstudio.strip.based.filtering.strategy> 0 </webreportstudio.strip.based.filtering.strategy>

The valid options for this property are:

• 0 = data item will not be wrapped with the STRIP or TRIM function
• 1 = data item will be wrapped with the TRIM function
• 2 = (default) data item will be wrapped with the STRIP function
3. Restart your Web application server.

Update existing filters

The STRIP function is applied when you create the filter. The information about the filter including the STRIP function is stored in the report definition (XML). So, existing filters are not affected by disabling the STRIP function. To disable the STRIP function for existing filters, open the filter dialog box and click OK. This action resaves the filter with the STRIP function disabled.

Verify that the STRIP function is no longer being used

To verify that the STRIP function is no longer being used, perform the following steps.

1. Temporarily turn logging on for the workspace server.
• For SAS Web Report Studio 4.2 and 4.3, see SAS Note 34567.
• For SAS Web Report Studio 3.1, contact SAS Technical Support for instructions.
2. Create a test report with filter.
3. After you view the report, check the workspace server log to make sure that the STRIP function is not there.
4. Turn off the workspace server logging.
