Usage Note 12099: "IKernel.exe application error" message appears when installing SAS 9.x
When you install SAS 9.x, the following error message might appear:
IKernel.exe -- Application Error. The instruction at "0x771c732a"
referenced memory at "0x00163760". The memory could not be "read".
Click OK to terminate the program.
This is a known Microsoft problem. More details and possible fixes can be found here:

Basically, if a setup program checks for results of Installshield's
DoInstall function while performing an install, this coud cause the
installation program to fail because the DoInstall function always
returns a non-zero result. The patch corrects this behavior.
See SAS Note #016006 for a similiar error when installing 9.x and
there is a v8.x install present.
