A horizontal bar chart, which is displayed to summarize a variable having character values, indicates the frequency of occurrence of each value of the variable. Each unique value of the variable is represented by its own bar, and the length of the bar indicates the number of times that value occurred.
Note that if the variable has more than 20 values, a bar chart cannot be displayed. Instead, a frequency distribution is displayed.
