Usage Tasks

Monitoring User Activity

To determine which users have accessed specific SAS Application Servers, go to Report Centerthen selectProductsthen selectSAS Environment Managerthen selectNightly Reportsthen selectAPM Reportsthen selectServer Usage By User.
To determine the number of system accesses per day, per user, go to Report Centerthen selectProductsthen selectSAS Environment Managerthen selectNightly Reportsthen selectAudit Reportsthen selectAccess Activity by UserID and Access Activity Event Summary by UserID.
To determine which SAS procedures have been run and by which users, go to Report Centerthen selectProductsthen selectSAS Environment Managerthen selectNightly Reportsthen selectAPM Reportsthen selectProc Usage.

Finding User Login Errors

To determine which users have been locked out or have had failed login attempts, and to see how many users are currently logged in, go to Report Centerthen selectProductsthen selectSAS Environment Managerthen selectNightly Reportsthen selectAudit Reportsthen selectAuthentication Error and Login Not Authorized.

Evaluating SAS Work Directory Usage

Go to Resourcesthen selectBrowsethen selectServices and locate the resource machine_name SAS Home Directory 9.4 SAS work directory. You can also locate this resource as under the machine_name SAS Home Directory server resource.
The metrics for this resource are for the volume that contains the SAS work directory.
The SAS Work Directory field in the left corner of the window specifies the name of the SAS work directory on the volume being monitored.
In the charts or table of metric data, check Total kBytes Free and Use Percent for problems.
You can also use Environment Snapshot. Follow these steps:
  1. Select Analyzethen selectEnvironment Snapshot.
  2. In the Summary Table field, select the machine name.
  3. Select the Live System Queries tab, and then select the Df tab.
  4. The Df Output table contains the size, amount used, amount available, and percentage used for all directories on the machine. Locate the entry for the directory used for the SAS work directory to determine the usage.

Evaluating Log Directory Usage

To monitor a directory containing log files, follow these steps:
  1. Select Resourcesthen selectBrowsethen selectPlatforms and select the platform containing the log directory that you want to monitor.
  2. On the page for the selected platform, select Tools Menuthen selectNew Platform Service.
  3. On the New Service page, specify the name for the service and specify FileServer Directory in the Service Type field. Click OK.
  4. The page for the new service automatically appears, with a warning message that the resource has not been configured. Click the Configuration Properties link in the warning message.
  5. Specify the full path to the log directory in the path field. Click OK.
  6. The new platform service appears in the Resource table under Services. After the service has had time to collect data, select the service to view its metrics. The Disk Usage and Regular Files metrics are useful for determining the usage of the directory.

Evaluating Memory Usage on a Host

To determine the memory usage (including total memory, free memory, and swap space usage) for a host in a deployment, select Resourcesthen selectBrowsethen selectPlatforms and select the platform whose memory you want to check.
On the page for the platform, the RAM field (in the upper right) specifies the total memory for the host.
Click on Metric Data to view the table of metrics for the host. Use these metrics to evaluate memory usage for the host:
  • Total Memory (this value will match the value of the RAM field, although RAM is specified in MB and Total Memory in GB)
  • Used Memory
  • Used Memory (–buffers/cache)
  • Percent Used Memory
  • Percent Free Memory
Use these metrics to evaluate swap space usage:
  • Swap Free
  • Percent Swap Free
  • Percent Swap used
Click on Indicators to view these metrics in chart form. The charts are useful for evaluating changes in memory usage over time. If the chart for one or more of the metrics is not displayed, select the Problem Metrics field and change the selection to All Metrics.

Evaluating Resource Usage for Hosts

To determine CPU and I/O usage for a host in a deployment, select Resourcesthen selectBrowsethen selectPlatforms and select the platform whose resources you want to check.
On the page for the platform, the CPU Speed field (in the upper left) specifies the number and speed of the processors on the machine.
Click on Metric Data to view the table of metrics for the host. Use these metrics to evaluate CPU usage for the host:
  • CPU Usage
  • CPU Wait
  • User CPU
  • CPU Idle
  • CPU IRQ
Use the File System Read/Writes per Minute metric to evaluate I/O performance over time.
Click on Indicators to view these metrics in chart form. The charts are useful for evaluating changes in memory usage over time. If the chart for one or more of the metrics is not displayed, select the Problem Metrics field and change the selection to All Metrics.

Evaluating Disk Usage on a UNIX Machine

To determine usage for a file mount on a UNIX machine, follow these steps:
  1. Select Resourcesthen selectBrowsethen selectServices.
  2. Select FileServer Mount in the All Service Types field and click the arrow go button at the end of the search bar.
  3. Select the file mount that you want to view.
  4. Use these metrics to evaluate usage for the file mount:
    • Capacity
    • Total Bytes Used
    • Use Percent

Evaluating Disk Usage for the postgreSQL Database

You might want to check the amount of disk space used by the entire Postgres database or by individual databases. The ones that are of the most interest are SharedServices (which is the web interface platform database) and EVManager (which is the SAS Environment Manager database).
Note: PostgreSQL metrics cannot be collected unless you supply a user ID and password for the postgreSQL resource.
To check the space used by a postgreSQL database, select Resourcesthen selectBrowsethen selectServers. Select the server resource machine_name PostgreSQL 9.x localhost:9432 in the table.
In the Services area, select the entry for the database that you want to view. Use the Data Space Used metric to evaluate the amount of space used by the database.

Evaluating Disk Usage on a Windows Machine

To determine usage on a Windows machine, follow these steps:
  1. Select Resourcesthen selectBrowsethen selectPlatforms.
  2. Select the Windows machine whose disk usage you want to view.
  3. In the page for the selected machine, select a File System (drive:) local/NTFS entry in the Platform Services Health area.
  4. Use these metrics to evaluate disk usage:
    • Capacity
    • Total Bytes Free
    • Use Percent
