Installing COB2SAS from the SAS web site

There are 2 versions of COB2SAS that you can download from the SAS web site. One version contains modifications that enable COB2SAS to take advantage of the V8 long variable names. It also contains modifications to allow COB2SAS to run on PC and UNIX platforms running SAS V8. The other version of COB2SAS is the original version that can function under V5 and V6 of SAS.

If you want to download the V8 modified version of COB2SAS, please use the following instructions:

STEP 1: DOWNLOAD THE ZIPPED FILE TO YOUR PC
Go to the following web page and download the zipped file http://ftp.sas.com/techsup/download/mvs/cob2sas8.zip

STEP 2: EXTRACT THE ZIPPED FILE
Once you have the downloaded file on your PC, create a temporary directory. Unzip the file using Winzip (or some other zip software) into this temporary directory.

STEP 3: READ THE README.TXT FILE
The README.TXT file contains information about this modified version of COB2SAS. It also contains the rest of the install process.

The V5/V6 version of cob2sas can be used under MVS, CMS, and VSE. On VSE COB2SAS is stored in ULIB.USUB. VSE sites can refer to Technical Support document TS-528 to learn how to invoke COB2SAS (http://support.sas.com/techsup/technote/ts528.html) If you want to download the V5/V6 version of COB2SAS for MVS or CMS, please use the following instructions:

STEP 1: DOWNLOAD THE ZIPPED FILE TO YOUR PC
Go to the following web page and download the zipped file: http://www.sas.com/techsup/download/mvs/cob2sas.zip

STEP 2: EXTRACT THE ZIPPED FILE
Once you have the downloaded file on your PC, create a temporary directory. Unzip the file using Winzip (or some other zip software) into this temporary directory.

STEP 3: PRINT THE R2NSTL FILE
Print out, or keep a copy of, the R2NSTL file contained in the extracted information. This file contains the installation instructions that you receive when you get COB2SAS via a tape or cartridge. Later in these instructions, you will need to reference this document.

STEP 4: MOVE THESE FILES TO THE HOST
This part is going to be host dependent. Follow the instructions that are relevant to your host.

MVS
On MVS, the COB2SAS programs are to reside in a PDS (Partitioned Data Set). On MVS using ISPF 3.2, you must first create this PDS with the following characteristics:

             SPACE=(6160,(150,10,2)),
             DCB=(DSORG=PO,LRECL=80,BLKSIZE=6160,RECFM=FB)

For more information about PDS's and the creation of PDS's refer to your IBM documentation or contact your local help desk. To upload the files use whatever utilities you have available (FTP, 3270 emulation utilities). Upload each extracted file into this PDS such that the member name will be the same as the extracted filename. When you upload this file, make sure that an ASCII-to-EBCDIC translation does occur. Do not perform a binary transfer.

CMS
First you must upload the extracted files to a CMS minidisk using whatever utilities you have available (FTP, 3270 emulation utilities). When you upload these files, the files must end up as fixed block files with a logical record length of 80. Also when uploading the files, make sure that an ASCII-to-EBCDIC translation does occur. Do not perform a binary transfer. The utility that you use to transfer the files should have options to upload the files in this manner. Refer to documentation for the utility for more information about how to do this.

Upload each extracted file to your CMS minidisk so that the filenames match the filenames in the extracted files. The filetypes must be COPY.

Once you have all of them on your CMS minidisk, you must then create the COB2SAS maclib so that it contains all of these files. To do this, you use the CMS MACLIB GEN statement. The syntax would be similar to the following:

          MACLIB GEN COB2SAS filename1 filename2 ... filenameN

In this example, the "filename1 through filenameN" would be a sequential listing of the filenames uploaded to your CMS minidisk. Do not specify the filetypes or filemodes. For more information about maclibs, the creation of maclibs, and the adding of files to a maclib, refer to your IBM documentation or contact your local help desk.

STEP 5 : REFER TO THE R2NSTL DOCUMENTATION TO TEST COB2SAS
In Step 3, you printed the R2NSTL file. This documentation contains 2 sections entitled "Testing under CMS" and "Testing under MVS". Proceed to one of these two sections depending on your host. Continue the installation process as described in the R2NSTL file starting with these sections.
