Peaceful Coexistence: SAS® 9.2 and SAS 9.1.3
It is possible to run SAS 9.2 and SAS 9.1.3 simultaneously on the same computer.
This topic lists all known issues, to help you avoid any conflicts.
If you want to run a SAS 9 release on the same computer as SAS 8.2,
see Peaceful Coexistence: SAS®9 and SAS 8.2.
Known Issues for Coexistence
- Data sets and other SAS files:
SAS strives wherever possible to support cross-release compatibility.
- Use the interactive Compatibility Calculator
(support.sas.com/rnd/migration/planning/files/calculator/)
to determine whether you can use your SAS 9.1.3 files in SAS 9.2 without migrating
them to SAS 9.2 format.
- If you use certain
SAS 9.2 file features
(support.sas.com/rnd/migration/planning/files/forward.html),
then those SAS 9.2 files are incompatible with SAS 9.1.3. The features are optional.
- If you upgrade to 64-bit SAS, it is recommended to not store
64-bit SAS files in the same library as 32-bit SAS files.
The level of access supported between the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of files is different.
Keeping your 64-bit SAS 9 files in a separate location will keep data access functionality consistent
within the library.
- If you make a copy of a data set to test the new release of SAS and
the data set is live (that is, continually updated), then you must either update
the two data sets concurrently or designate one data set to be frozen and later discarded.
- Syntax and New Features:
Some syntax and features in your SAS 9.1.3 code, stored processes, and custom applications might behave
differently in SAS 9.2.
If you update your code for SAS 9.2, you might not be able to run it in SAS 9.1.3.

Considerations for Customers Upgrading to SAS® 9.2
(support.sas.com/92administration).
- Installation and configuration:
- If you are installing both SAS 9.1.3 and SAS 9.2, install
SAS 9.1.3 first. Otherwise, you might run into problems
with the shared files directory.
- Make sure SAS 9.2 doesn't use the same TCP/IP port numbers as SAS 9.1.3.
- Install SAS 9.1.3 and SAS 9.2 in separate locations on the machine.
- You can add multiple SAS 9.2 orders to a single SAS Software Depot, but do not
add a SAS 9.2 order to a SAS 9.1.3 Software Depot, or the SAS 9.1.3 content might be
overwritten or corrupted.
- It is recommended that you use the SAS configuration file (sasv9.cfg)
to separate the locations of SASWORK.
- If you are migrating a metadata-based deployment from SAS 9.1.3 to SAS 9.2,
use the same installer account and administrative accounts for both deployments to avoid permission issues.
- Operating environment:
- Some SAS 9.1.3 operating environments
(support.sas.com/rnd/migration/planning/platform/sas9platforms.html)
are no longer supported in SAS 9.2.
- Updates made to an operating environment for SAS 9.2 system requirements
(support.sas.com/documentation/installcenter/)
might conflict with SAS 9.1.3, although this has not been reported.
- Running two versions of SAS on a machine might require additional disk space or CPU time.
