New SAS® Cleanwork Utility
Starting with SAS® 9.4M2 (TS1M2), there is a new stand-alone Cleanwork utility, named cleanwork.exe, that is installed, by default, with SAS® Foundation (Base SAS®) in the !SASROOT directory. In addition, you can use the new SAS Cleanwork utility with any version of SAS, starting with SAS®6. See the download links below.
Cleanwork.exe searches for and cleans up any temporary and utility files and directories that are generated by SAS. It also detects orphaned SAS Work and SAS Utility directories on back-end SAS compute systems. These orphaned directories result when SAS® Enterprise Guide® or any other SAS GUI application is terminated incorrectly, and the SAS session does not terminate properly.
See Cleanwork Utility in SAS® 9.4 Companion for Windows, Fifth Edition, for more information.
You can schedule these utilities to run periodically, such as once a week or once a month, through the Microsoft Windows Scheduling utility or another scheduler.
To use the new SAS Cleanwork Utility with SAS 9.4 (TS1M1) and earlier SAS versions, you can download the utility and associated documentation from our FTP site:
Note: The files above might not automatically download from the Chrome or Edge browsers. So, to download the file, first right-click the link above and choose Copy Link Address. Next, open Internet Explorer (IE) and then paste the URL in the IE browser.
Previous SAS® Disk Cleanup Handler
For SAS® 9.2 and SAS® 9.3, the SAS Disk Cleanup Handler replaces a SAS® 9.1 program called cleanworkpc.sas. See the Previous SAS Cleanworkpc Program Limitations section below.
The SAS Disk Cleanup Handler searches for and cleans up any temporary and utility files and directories that are generated by SAS.
You can download the SAS Disk Cleanup Handler for SAS 9.1. From the SAS FTP site, open the file SAS_Disk_Cleanup_Handler.zip. For installation and usage instructions, read SAS Disk Cleanup Handler Instructions.txt.
SAS Disk Cleanup Handler is available starting in SAS 9.2. See SAS 9.2 Companion for Windows, Second Edition for more information.
Note that SAS® Enterprise Guide® 5.1 creates temporary directories inside the SAS Work library that are not deleted by the SAS Disk Cleanup Handler. A SAS Enterprise Guide 5.1 hot fix and SAS® Add-in for Microsoft Office 5.1 hot fix are available in Problem Note 47304.
Previous SAS Cleanworkpc Program Limitations
Starting with SAS 9.1, a program called cleanworkpc.sas is provided. Cleanworkpc.sas is being replaced, as noted above, because it cleans out any temporary files and directories, even those in current use when you are running SAS.
