When sorting a table with the PROC SORT OVERWRITE option, the output might not be sorted. This issue might occur when the table contains the following attributes:

• The COMPRESS= data set option is not NO
• RESUSE=YES

There is no indication that the table was not correctly sorted.

In addition, you might encounter the following symptoms when using that sorted table:

• A PROC SQL WHERE clause might not return the expected rows. There is no message in the log that indicates this issue.

• A DATA step using a BY statement might receive the following error:
