Problem Note 70841: "Word cannot read the formatting in this document" and a corrupted RTF file occur when ODS PROCLABEL text exceeds 256 characters
You might encounter an issue in which a corrupted file is created and Microsoft Word returns the following pop-up message:
Word cannot read the formatting in this document.
This issue occurs under the following conditions:
- You use the ODS PROCLABEL statement to create a table of contents in the ODS RTF destination.
- The text exceeds 256 characters and terminates in the middle of curly brackets.
Other destinations, such as PDF, Tagsets.RTF, and HTML seem to ignore the 256-character limit and output the full PROCLABEL text in the table of contents. In addition, if the PROCLABEL text does not contain curly brackets, the RTF destination outputs the file with truncated text. You can use any of these alternatives as workarounds.
A hot fix is planned for this issue.
