Problem Note 69685: "Error attempting to CREATE a DBMS table. ERROR: ORACLE execute error..." occurs when creating an Oracle table in SAS/ACCESS® Interface to Oracle

DetailsHotfixAboutRate It

When you try to create an Oracle table with Oracle 12c or later and your input table contains a variable that is longer than 4,000 characters in length, an error similar to the following might occur:

ERROR: Error attempting to CREATE a DBMS table. ERROR: ORACLE execute error:
ORA-00910: specified length too long for its datatype.

The issue occurs because the variable is created as a VARCHAR2 data type rather than a CLOB data type. Here are specific scenarios:

  • If a text variable is 32,767 bytes or fewer and if MAX_STRING_SIZE=EXTENDED, then that variable is written to Oracle as a VARCHAR2 data type.
  • If a text value is more than 4,000 bytes in length and MAX_STRING_SIZE=STANDARD, then the variable is written to Oracle as a CLOB data type.
  • If MAX_STRING_SIZE=STANDARD and a text value is 4,000 bytes or fewer, then the value is written to Oracle as a VARCHAR2 data type.

A new LIBNAME option, MAX_STRING_SIZE, has been added with this hot fix.

You can use the MAX_STRING_SIZE= LIBNAME option to specify how to define character variables in Oracle. The value that you specify for this option should match the value of the MAX_STRING_SIZE parameter in the Oracle configuration file.
