Problem Note 66860: The "Create Slice" option might fail with the message "Error Creating Slice" in SAS® Add-In for Microsoft Office when you use the OLAP Analyzer

DetailsHotfixAboutRate It

When you use the Create Slice option in SAS Add-In for Microsoft Office, the operation might fail with the following error:

error creating slice

This issue occurs when you use the OLAP Analyzer.

For example, you encounter this issue when you complete steps similar to the following:

  1. Open Microsoft Excel and select SAS menu ► Data.
  2. Open and analyze a specific OLAP cube that you select in the Data field. Then, select the OLAP Analyzer radio button and click OK as shown in the following image:

  1. The OLAP cube is correctly added into the spreadsheet. But, when you try to use the Create Slice option as shown below, the error might occur:

In the Excel.log, the following error appears:

In this 2020-09-28 08:21:30,358 [VSTA_Main] ERROR SAS.OfficeAddin.OfficeAddinBase [(null)] - Error Creating Slice.
SAS.OfficeAddin.OlapViewerException: Error Creating Slice. ---> SAS.EC.ServerInterfaces.ConnectionRequiredException: A workspace connection to server 'SASApp' is required for the requested operation.

   --- End of inner exception stack trace ---
   at SAS.OfficeAddin.OlapViewer.OlapViewerManager.CreateSlice()
   at SAS.OfficeAddin.ExcelAddin.OnOlapViewerCreateSlice()

This issue happens only when you try to use the OLAP Analyzer without creating a connection to the server SASApp. If you create a connection to the SASApp server before opening and analyzing the OLAP cube, then the Create Slice option works correctly.

To work around this issue, you can follow these steps:

  1. Select Data ► Servers and double-click the SASApp server. You see a green check mark on SASApp as shown in the image below:

  1. Go to SAS Folders and select the OLAP cube.
  2. Use the Create Slice option.
